Will there be a change to the media at some point in time that will allow direct copies of dual layered DVDs? Or is the 4.x gb limit something that will take a new type of DVD writer to overcome? Just curious.

I dont think it is possible unless you are using a hardware device that stamps the CD instead of burning it.

New type, dual layer disk can only be pressed together, even studios cannot burn then... they output them to tape usually and let whoever does the duplication press the 2 layers together....
So yes it will require a different machine to burn a full DVD and No I dont think its likely to happen... at least not soon. -
How would it burn the second layer without damaging the first layer it already burnt?
-
I doubt its possible personally, but if it ever will work it will take a new type of burner ... if it can read through a layer who knows maybe they'll figure out how to make one burn through a layer... but I seriously doubt it.

Blue ray technology is on the horizon, capable of storing up to 27GB on a single layer disc. Even if dual layer burning with current red laser technology was possible, no one is going to invest huge amouns of money trying to develop it.

Blue - Ray from sony only supports up to 23 GB per side....
To burn or not to burn, that is the question. -
Sounds familur huh? The Seven turns into a 3? No!
Needless to say I still think its not very likely to work its way into home set top players... if commercial Blueray movie disk came out it would fracture the market badly.
Needless to say if the movies dont switch but the ability to read them is there... well byebye transcodeing....
But before any of this matters it has to do something just as important as comeing out... it has to get affordable. So I still think we're in for a long wait. -
When DVD standard was created, there were double-layer recordables included. So it was seen possible to write through the layer (and it is).
Life has changed since these days quite a bit. Now we have RWs with the size of stamped and R disks (were thought to be smaller originally) to mention something.
I just have to quote DJRumpy:
Difficult to see the future is, dark side clouds everything. -
I don't see why DVD writer cannot be made to burn dual layers disc (if it's available). Burning a layer requires the laser len to focus precisely to a particular depth. Let's say if burns the lower layer first, then refocus to burn the upper layer, the lower one will not be destroyed since laser energy is only strong at the focus distance.
I have worked with laser cutting/trimming machine and that's how they works.ktnwin - PATIENCE -
Can it be technically done - maybe. Possible with commercial gear now - no. Will be possible with commercial gear in the future - unlikely unless there is a breakdown in the Blueray/Bluewhatever camps.
Don't hold your breath.Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'
