    i downloaded a couple of AVIs and played them using WMP. video is OK but it plays with no sound. i opened the files using VDub and it says there that it has an unknown compression (tag0161). pls help!

    Download Gspot (tools section), run it on your file, it will tell you the required codec.

    The sound is AC3, you need to install an AC3 filter
