I was rearranging my entertainment unit yesterday and I put my TV down next to my sub stupid fool. Anyways now my screen is all purple and green and stuff. This sort of thing has happened to me before with other speakers and the discoloration eventually goes away, but this time it was a 12" sub with a huge magnet and it has taken over more than half the screen. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of this?
    Thanks.

  2. Every TV has an auto-degauss feature, which you can invoke by pulling out the mains plug for 30min or so, then plugging the set back in and switching it on. This demagnetising function often causes a brief buzzing sound. Alternatively, place a compass on top of the cabinet, its needle will twitch violently when the degauss circuit is doing its stuff. Never turn the set round while it's running; the Earth's magnetic field will upset beam-landing and purity.

If the degauss action takes place but there's still a colour-stain, it's possible that some local magnetic field is present. Move any speakers at least 2m from the set and degauss once more. If you live in a block of flats or other steel-framed building it may be that the structure itself is magnetic! Test for this by putting the set in the middle of the room, degaussing and trying once more. It may be possible (talk to the dealer) to get the steel joists demagnetised.

If you're very keen you can buy a mains-operated degaussing coil yourself for £40 from CPC (% 01772 654455, order code IN00705) or ELC on % 020 8472 4871. You have to withdraw it several feet from the TV (or whatever you're trying to demagnetise) before switching it off, and there's a limit to its capability. It won't demagnetise a loudspeaker!
