Can anyone please explain the S-packets underflow thing, I get it quite often but it seems to have absolutely no effect on the generated file. WTF?

Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!

i tried both ways and get the error on the first link and both come out as mpeg-2 which has to come out as mpeg-1 so you can burn as vcd.

  9. when the trick is done how do we burn withnero...do we choose to burn like a vcd or like a svcd???

  10. The point of the vcd header trick is to convince a dvd player to play an mpeg-2 file even though it "thinks" it can only play mpeg-1 vcds. You therefore encode to mpeg-2, mux to vcd format and burn in Nero as VCD.

  11. Just follow the guide on vcdeasy, i followed it and it worked perfect.

    http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick

Burn with nero AFTER the header trick -> VCD -> after checking the file u'll get the message that it's a SVCD ur trying to burn, just click on "turn off standard competability and continue" (summat like that i'm livin in holland and i get's me a Dutch message saying just about this...... .....)

When you mulitplex something the multiplexor uses a set mux rate. This rate is proportional to the bitrate. This basically sets how much of the data is sent to the player's buffer at any time. Send too much, and the player can't process it all, send to little and it doesn't read ahead enough. Both instances will cause audio and video desync. This is what the buffer underflows are referring to. When a disk with buffer underflows is played back, it may or may not have sync problems depending on the severity of those underflows and on the quality of your dvd player.

When you multiplex an mpeg2 file, presumabably encoded at a high bitrate ~2mbits or more, and you use the mpeg1 vcd output setting in TMPGenc it is using a mux rate proportional to what would be used for 1150kbits. Of course this is going to cause underflows.

The solution is to use the non-standard vcd output or to use bbmpeg to multiplex and manually raise the mux rate. (if you set it to 0 it will automatically do this for you.)

In any case, the VCD header trick should only be used as an absolute last resort. You are creating a disk which is very far from any standard. If it plays at all there is a good chance you will run into many problems, and its likely that certain features such as PBC will not function correctly. Even if your current player supports these hybrid disks, your next player may not support it even if it supports both VCD and SVCD. 5-10yrs form now you may wind up with a very large collection of movies which are only playable on your pc.

How do you make a non-standard vcd output?

  20. VCD header trick works fine for now, but for the future can I extract the dat file, convert it and re-multiplex this mpeg with the right header so the next player I buy (svcd ready) will be able to read it?

ranvil010: if you set the output in TMPGenc to vcd non-standard and you still get buffer underflows then follow the advice I gave before. Multiplex with BBmpeg and use the standard VCD option but set the forced mux rate to 0. Unless your bitrate is ridiculously high there is really no way possible to get buffer underflows using this method. To multiplex with BBmpeg just read the guides on this site.

Yes scottymac you can do that. Seems kinda silly though since you can buy a svcd compatible dvd player for about US $40 on sale. The amount of cdr's you'll go through burning everything twice will probably cost almost this much.

Just to add something, if you correctly apply the mpeg1 header to your mpeg2 file and burn as a non-standard VCD that in no way guarantees that it will play back on ANY hardware player. The vast majority of dvd players probably won't play such a disk, whether they support VCD or SVCD. If after following the guides you still can't get it to play, this is probably just normal.
