  2. What type of encoding are you using? Single pass VBR perhaps? bitrate calculators won't work with VBR unless you use 2-pass.

  3. Besides, the math is so simple that I use windows calc...

what are you trying to do here? insult my inteligence? make yourself look smart?

firstly, i tried working the bitrate out just with just with my calc

the dvd is 115 mins long, thats 6900 secs

i was going to use mp3 128kbits/s for the audio
so the uadio will take up

    6900*128*1000/8 = 110400000 bytes=105 meg

since i want to fit it on 1 700meg cd that means we have
    700-105=595megs left for video

    595 megs = 4991222 kilobits
note this kilo is 1000 not 1024

    so the bitrate should be

    4991222/6900=723kbits/sec

i tried this with 1 pass vbr and it came out at about 750meg
tried again with bitrate 650 (guess) and it came out at about 730meg

so at this point i was geting quite anoyed and decided to download a calc prog. the calprog told me to use 703 kbits/sec (which is you'll see is quite close to what i calculated). but seeing as id tried 650 and it still came out big i decided to seek help. hope u dont mind

if the math is so simple why doesn't it work ?

Because there is an overhead when the audio and video are interleaved.

If you use Gordian Knot, which can act as a front-end for Smartripper, DVD2AVI, you can estimate the final filesize to within a few MB.

    Take a look at www.doom9.org
