Whilst I'm truly grateful to the creator of TMPGenc for such a wonderful product, does anyone know of an alternative encoder for using with CladDVD and DVD2Avi?
I've upgraded my Duron 800 to an Athlon 2000XP and hope that'll speed up the encoding time, but doesn anyone know of something quicker?
I have an encoder built into Ulead DVD Movie Factory, but don't imagine I can use that with CladDVD and DVD2Avi!
Thanks,
Will

if you are talking about re-encoding then the quickest and the best output of quality as got to be CCE.
i use dvd2dvdr 1.3.2 which needs cce 2.5 to do all my dvd9 disc.
even films like lord of the rings turn out perfect and yet it only takes about 5-6 hours (overnight whilst in bed).
you will end up with an m2v file and an ac3 file.
hope it helps.

The computer upgrade should cut your encode times dramatically. If that's still not fast enough try doing some of the processing with other programs first. For example, if you use noise reduction, brighness, and color changes can be done much quicker on VirtualDub so if you are doing some processing like that do it before TMPEGnc (espically the noise reduction).

Thanks.
I tend not to 'filter around' in TMPGEnc, and haven't yet found a suitable editing package for home movies of my baby son which I can make any sense of how to use!
Thanks again,

It's not an encoder right?
Can you direct me to a site where I can perhaps learn how to brighten, edit/clip and most important fade out (will virtualdub do this?). I've shyed away from virtualdub in the last as I was never sure if what I was doing would affect the quality or even turn a compliant mpeg into something else.

try using mgi videowave 5 for your home movies as i use it all the time with great results -
it sounds like you need Premiere... I'm sure premiere can do all the editing... and I think there is a plugin of CCE for Premiere...

I wouldn't worry too much my friend. Any speed up that you will receive from CCE will probably be negligable compared to the upgrade you just did (unless that Processor is coupled with a slow hdd, slow ram, and a bad motherboard...)
Think of the 800Mhz Duron as a nuetrered processor (like the Celeron) so it won't preform well. that is why they are budget processors (though the prices of 1600+s are just around 50 bucks (48 at newegg...) these days)
But you will defenitely experience a HUGE boost and I'd say live with TMPGEnc -

I intended to spend £100.00 ($150-ish) on *just* a mobo and lower spec athlon and ended up nearer £600.00, but it was worth it and included a Panasonic DVD-R burner (with my wife's blessing, amazing!)
The AMD 2000XP was £65 ($90) this side of the pond, retail boxed with fan, warranty etc.
Thanks, take care.

Also take a look at the MainConcept encoder (www.mainconcept.com) it is almost as fast as CCE, much faster than TMPG, and produces quality that is very comparable to both of them.
It is also 1/10th of the price of CCE ($149), if you were to pay for CCE of course -

Premier still the best for this kind of stuff?
Thanks,

I'm getting 'sound out of sync' issues with TMPGEnc (at least I think it's TMPGenc), when converting my first dvd to dvd-r.
I think I'll need to try another encoder to indeed assess whether TMPGEnc is at fault.

If you're backing up commercial DVDs(at least that's what I understand from your last post), don't use TMPGenc. Use CCE for any compressing you have to do, then use DVDMaestro to author it. DVDMaestro will fix any sync problems you might have.
Sometimes, ya just gotta.....umm, what's the word........FART??? -
In all fairness, unless you are going to spend a lot of money TMPGenc is wiiiicked..........
I really dont know why it gets so much stick I use it and its a beautiful program with great results.
YES I am an IDIOT....
