I appreciate I should be capturing (FreeVCR) at 720 x 576 for encoding (TMPGEnc), but what's the result of encoding using a capture at 352 x 288?
I tried a 720 x 576 capture last night using huffyuv and despite my relatively decent system was losing 25% of frames.
I must admit I haven't tried the PicVideo codec at 720 x 576 but can't see how the codec would make any difference.

When you get your Athlon it should help.
You can try 1/2 D1 DVD resolution 352x480 NTSC (352x576 PAL) - make sure your audio is 48khz for DVD.Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -

Until last summer when I upgraded to an Athlon 1800+, I was capturing fine using a Duron 750, 512 pc133 sdram and Windows 2000 Sp2.
What software are you using to capture ?
The faster chip did speed up my avi->mpegII times alot. Almost 4 times faster ! -

You aren't the only one who is unable to capture any larger using Huffyuv. I am puzzled despite that fact my computer is Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz processor.
I can only do a small size 352x288 and capturing in Huffyuv is tough. I tried to capture for PAL TV on size 704x576 and this failed. I tried everything, no improvement.
I do believe this may have something to do with my capture card, "LeadTek WinFast A250 MyVIVO". I don’t really know why I am unable to do any greater capture.
My default capture program is WinFast PVR and having no problem capturing 640x480. WinFast PVR does have automatic de-interlacing available.
I also have no problem capturing DivX and Microsoft’s MPEG4 using VirtualDub on the same size of 640x480. However interlacing is a problem when using VirtualDub. I am trying to find the best solution for this problem. I’ve tried “Smart Deinterlacer” and can anyone suggest a better filter?
I still can't capture any larger on any codec. Anyway, I’ll find a way. -

The main reason I haven't bothered too much with huffyuv is I can't see any massive increase in quality over PicVideo. I'm sure I'm wrong and whilst have the storage space would be interested to learn from anyone their opions on PicVideo mpeg vs huffyuv quality comparisons.
I have a dedicated video drive set up (2 x 80gb Maxtor D740x's on a RAID 0 - before this I was capturing to my one and only HDD which was laughable.

I have been testing different sizes to capture using huffyuv and now able to capture at 640x480. I have to check a little more on the sound as it seems to be a slightly out of sync with the video.
So, now I can only do 352x288 and 640x480. The TV is PAL.
VirtualDub tells me that there is a restriction, "depth 24". I presume size restrictions. Is this correct?
I noticed my video card and its default capture program have something to do with the restrictive capture resolution sizes. All other video codecs I use can capture the same size at 640x480 successfully.
Hacked versions of DivX, the 5.02 version of DivX and Microsoft's MPEG all are at this size without a problem. Size 480x576, 704x576 and 720x576 are problems in my system.
I am unable to do any more and I have to research on it more later.
I now go on to try out the NTSC videos to capture shortly. I hope huffyuv will be better using the American TV, NTSC. -

I got to know that 25fps is no good for huffyuv with the video and sound out of sync. The interlacing as not too bad on 640x480 and this can be corrected with VirtualDub's de-interlacing process.
