I have only used Memorex dvd-r and Memorex+r but can't quite get 2 hours much less 4 hours on one ,it says on the back of the Memorex jewel case you can put as much as 6 hours on them but the quality suffers with longer recording time. When i record the only speed option i get is Auto......maybe i have overlooked something. I am useing Sonic MyDVD....spsp2

MyDVD is a very poor authoring program as it converts audio DVD to PCM,which is an uncompressed format. PCM on a two hour movie will use 1.5GB's for audio compared to 200-400MB's if you used ac3 or mpeg audio. Further inmy expierence it will also re-encode the video firther wasteing file space. MyDVD is "cripple-ware" given for free with DVD burners, don't use it.

I backed up dinotopia (nigh on 4 hours) onto a single dvdr, I think the re-encoded bitrate was just above 2000. This was authored using the original ac3 soundtrack which as wulf109 stated, leaves more room for video bitrates. I did the simple author with Ifoedit 0.95 looks ok, though dark/action scenes get a bit blocky.
