Burning Format for DVDR?

Hey yall, I did a search on the DVD formats and nothing came up. I want to know what format you use to burn media to a DVDR to play in a DVD playing Unit. I tried...uhh...avi or somethign, it was a VCD or whatever and the one burning program said it wasnt compatible w/ DVD players, only DVDrom's. I would like to burn some movies, and movies that i tape w/ my camcorder from parties and stuff.. But what format do you burn in? programs to convert? etc?

Also whats a good program to burn the format?

these posts are getting really weird,
same questions, over and over again,

people bought dvd burners, thinking it was easy,
but its no fun, the first hundred times or so....
