  1. I have been trying to use a guide to do some re-encoding that involves DVDSVCD and CCE. I have set everything up just as the guide stated. There is a problem though. DVDSVCD and CCE are set to use Multipass VBR at 4 iterations as per the guide (I assume this is for quality sake). The first pass seems to work great. That is, CCE encodes on the first pass in about 3 hours or so. However, the second pass is going so slow that the the estimated time is 15 hours. I have tried this twice and the first time it actually got so slow during the second pass that it hung. The second attempt was so slow that I had to shut it down. Does anyone know what is wrong? Can I single pass it or will quality become an issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

  2. hello,

to answer one of your questions, no you do not have to do a 4 pass. of course that would give you the best quality but if the movie is less then 90 minutes or doesn't have alot of action you could do a vbr or a cbr. I usually use a vbr on movies less then 90 minutes and they turn out pretty good.
As for the speed, is it doing inverse telecine. this takes along time. I see you are running a 866mhz computer. When i had my 766 mhz i was getting about 1 pass per 3.5 hours so doing a 4 pass on this would take about 13 1/2 to 14 hours. since you are actually doing a 5 pass. first one is the vaf file and then the 4 making the mpv.
Also i wanted to tell you that when it says the 2nd pass is taking 15 hours, it's actually telling you how long it is going to take to do 4 passes. When it makes the vaf file it is telling you how long to do just 1 pass, then when it starts encoding the mpv the time it gives is for all the passes put togther, not just 1.
I hope this helps a bit

  3. sunmistrez,

You hit the nail right on the head. Thank you very much. Actually, after doing some reading, I just started using 2 pass VBR and the movie looks just fine to me. Honestly, I couldn't see where anymore passes would have helped. Thanks again!
