  1. I own the 4-disc set and am ripping the main movie only for backup purposes and trips (i fly a lot). I have stream-ripped the main movie 2channel audio and video only with ifoedit and cut the credits off using vstrip.

I have one folder that is 4.60GB (disc 1) and the other folder (disc 2) is 4.62GB. I am fairly new to DVD backup so I just thought I would see if:

    1) these will fit on dvd-r's because I read different places that a dvd-r's size isn't truely 4.7gb.

    2) if they won't fit, is there anything else I can do before I re-encode (although I have re-encoded disc 1 with about 5400k/sec and I can't tell a difference, however when I re-encoded a portion of disc 2 there was a noticeable drop in quality on a 36" tv)

    Thanks in advance...

  2. You really need to see this

On a serious note, here is how one person did his backup of LOTR. I have not tried this method yet. I am not sure where I copied this from.

    -----------

Start with stream ripping (IFOedit), OK, Here is the trick. Before you start anything. You are going to make 2 disks. 1 DVDr for the first disk and 1 DVDr for the second disk (With the credits cut).

So, If you thought on ripping it down to a single disk, the other people ARE Correct, the quality will stink.

OK, ready.... Use DVD Decryptor, make 2 folders, One to hold disk1 of the movie and the other to hold disk2.

Now we have raw files to process down to 4.3g. Now stream rip these 2 movies down using IFOedit. When your done you will have movie 1 @ 4.7 and movie 2 @4.1GB.

so all you have to do is use Vstrip to cut up the end of disk1 to move it to the beginning of disk2. that way you can fit them both on just 2 disks. I set Vstrip to cut at 115Mb of the last chapt of disk1, it was inbetween a scene when the actors are at the "council of the elders" When no one was talking. This can be done.

You should learn how to use DVD2AVI, open up the vobs, examine the vod/cell IDs.

Then learn how to use vStrip and cut them up if needed.

Then reauthor the project. LOTR was a real pain in the ars to get going, but if you want a movie only, single audio track backup, with the credits cut (actually I keep 5 sec of credits to keep the menu link correct and that way people dont complain- Is the movie over?)

Any way ...Good Luck! A simpler solution is to just extract the

  3. Joe,

Thanks for the info but tha's how I did it originally, ending up with 2 movies both about 4.6 gb. The only thing I could still rip would be the subtitles but Iwant them for when the elves speak. Re-encoding isn't so bad. Just takes longer.

    Thanks...

  5. Vidhack,

Getting to where I did was because of your original post. However, I must have done something incorrect because I couldn't get the moviess down to the same size as you did. Could you post a more detailed description if you have one on hand?

    Thanks...

  6. hilikus,

Hello, oh boy LOTR ext. Jeepers didnt know my post would turn into this never-ending post. But since your interested and havent totally copied MY POST, lets have a go at it. Perhaps you might want to PM me, since this might be a never-ending reply. The steps are many, and its about 20 DVD's ago, and my exact steps are now a bit rusty...

First of all, Lose the Subtitles. YUP, bye-bye. If you speak english, kill them. The movie has PERMANENT Subs, they are inbedded in the video. Remove them and check out the raw video, you will see, they are there.

Perhaps my exact filesizes are a bit off, I am not on my computer that I did the rip on, so I wrote what I re-called from that DVD rip. This process is long and complex, and unless you have Mastered vStrip, forget it.

Also, I had to end up ReMPeging a chapter to make it fit. I posted a complete HOW-TO post on this subject.... Its a minimal Rempeg. Also, I did 2 seperate rips of this movie, due to some folks telling me that the second disk stalled on the Chapter that I moved from disk1 to disk2. My Apex 1500 played it fine. So, my second rip I kept the menu, and completly moved Chapt 28 to disk 2. On the first rip Chapt 28 is split 115Mb into the Chapter VOB. Let me tell you, this cut will fit the movie on your DVDr by approx 2Mb, I was using Princo DVDr's.

So, if you really want to get into this, prepare for the long haul (several days of posts) and perhaps this isnt the forum to get into this. I check this board every few days, so, you might have those VOBS eating up space for a while....

Anyway, back to Band of Brothers, rippinnnnggggg........

    No offense ment Vidhack,

I did the next best thing and said:
"I am not sure where I copied this from. "

I had saved your LOTR info to a file on my HD without the URL. I wasn't about to got looking for the author when I replied.

On another subject, I am also doing BOB. The 5th DVD will be finished CCE in about 1 hour. Just curious how you did it?

I used DVD2DVD-R (VBR 3 pass with MB RESERVED at approximatley 2100) creating seperate .mp2's for each PGC. Captured the MENU of each DVD as a .BMP using SthSVCD and DVD2AVI the .AC3 menu theme song, finally reduced the 10 minute audio down to 1 minute using CoolEdit 2000. I used Maestro to put it all back together. I also added a few extra Chapter points as the original movies are lacking in this area.

    The results are EXCELLENT! 8)
