Well,I dont know your configuration but I would say yeah. I have it and I don't have any problems with my computer not using anything.
I have a Celeron 500MHZ with 64 MEGS RAM
I think that Windows 98SE has THE best compatibility with the most software and hardware, you won't be disappointed. -
Dell Demision XP,
Clean Boot with OEM Pre-Install Kit.
Windows 98 First Edition
350MHZ Pentium 2 running MMX.
128MEgs RAM.
NEC 48X CD-ROM
ATI All in Wonder Pro on PCI Socket 1.
AGP slot empty.
I'm thinking of removing the ATI and going for a WinTV PVR.
I really need real time MPEG 1 encoding.

You can do real time encoding with that card.... just look around this site for instructions -
With those computer specs I wouldn't recommend upgrading to anything after Windows 98 Second Edition. Windows ME, 2000 Professional, and XP are heavily bloated with extra GUI features that just bring computers with sub 500Mhz down to their knees... You'd be running on the minimum requirements for XP if you upgraded to it... It is the equivalent of a 486 50Mhz running Windows 95.

No he can't... I don't think ATI makes a card that can do Real Time Hardware MPEG encoding... And if they did, it would cost a pretty penny. The ATI cards I've seen and heard about have the processor do everything, much like any capture card on the market.

I have no plans to upgrade beyond 98SE.
I dun like ME, my friend had to do a clean install back to 98, NT is not good for capture i've read, XP has activation i don't like that. -
Will a hardware encoder give me good mpeg 1 real time even with my sh!tty processor.
-
That's what a hardware encoder does... it takes the load all by itself and leaves the processor smoking blunts in the back yard.

Double post... Daknit!
What's with replacing one of my favorite words to use with the word "love" anyway?

And whoever told you NT is bad for capture is a mook. 2000 Professional is THE BEST for doing ANYTHING on your computer... You never crash, you don't have filesize limits, and it's just better at handling RAM and all that jazz, so you can leave your PC on for weeks without losing performance or crashing...

The he11 it never crashes....Flask used to lock it up like a b1tch on my comp. Also I can't seem to tell much difference capturing, not to mention alot of drivers for win2k still suck badly. It may be good for capping but your other stuff may suffer.

Oh and one other thing...I will concede that 2000 crashes less than 98SE (though my comp with 98 is pretty darn stable) when 2000 does crash it can get UGLLLLYYYYY in a hurry....

my pc ran Win98 until ME was out. my personal opinion, 98 sucks. it ALWAYS crashed on me. i have been running ME since it came out and havn't had a problem yet. i have some friends who hate ME and love 98 all the way. who knows?????
XP will make it interesting in the battle between 98 and ME..... -
When Amanda (my friend) installed Win Me, not a single thing worked right.
Fatal System Errors, Drivers were destoryed and corrputed.
Now maybe it was before they installed Me over 98 and didn't clean boot. -
Win PVR by hamppuage works great as long as plan to use in for SVCD and get the patch upgrades from their german web site.
Been using for 4 weeks now and really like how SVCD's play back on my 36in.
I have been using win98 gold for 2 years now with no real problems.
Tried win2000 pro, very stable but unless you got the newest and biggest hardware PCI cards out their forget about drivers, forget about ISA also, never could get my creative labs modem blaster to work.
Plus your very limit to programs, games.
XP --- who's gonna spend $300, per disc for each computer, you can only go on the net for install so microsoft can check the license no multi install if you have more than one computer in the house. Don't EVEN tell me I am wrong My brother is a Beta tester for microsoft, he has had XP for over a year now testing it, he installed it on all 4 of his computers plus his lap top, lap top was the only one that did not crash all the time. Not enough Hardware driver support for cards and games software yet, tribes, tribes2, UT would not even load up, never got voodoo cards to work either, his TNT2 did.
I found Win98 more stable as I went with a newer system, zero crashes since I went with 1.2 gig thunderbird and EPOX motherboard, thats been 3 months ago.
