  1. I used to think Nero had a problem with DVD video and Stomp RecordNow Max was fine for burning them:
However, I now think it might just my players.

    DVD PLAYBACK EQUIPMENT:
As far as DVD players are concerned, I own a Toshiba SD-4109X, Apex AD-703 and Xbox and some DVD-ROM drives.

    RESULTS:
Nero burned discs (UDF/ISO - which is the standard according to some sites): play on ONLY the Apex.

Stomp burned discs (UDF): play on all THREE players.

    CONFUSION:
If UDF/ISO is the standard, then why do don't my Toshiba and Xbox play those?

If UDF is NOT the standard, then why do ALL three players play them?

    CONCERN:
That all the home movies that I have burned to DVD-R (as DVD Video) will not be playable by future generations of DVD players, due to the format they were burned in.

    WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR:
Any feedback, format (ISO vs. ISO/UDF) suggestions and player recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  2. Update: the newest Nero 5.5.10 (using DVD video compilation)
does play in the Toshiba. Previous versions didn't work!
Looks like they fixed the bugs, which clouded the issue even more.
(Not in Apex, but that might be unique to Apex,
or it could be the burn speed, I will burn at 1X next time).

Here is what i found out:

    Used Nero5590.
-burned video_ts folder with udf/iso would work with a hitachi and rca but NOT with my Toshiba sd1200 or Emerson.
-burned video_ts folder with udf mode and it would work with my Toshiba but not the emerson, hitachi, apex or ps2.
-burned video_ts folder with primodvd and works on all.

    used verbatim dvd-r and 1x

So i plan to use primodvd

  4. Use HP DVD200i with bitsetter so DVD+R's burn as DVD-ROM, plays in all these brands of players, all that I have tried.

Philips, Sony, Toshiba, APEX, daewoo, Sampo, Panasonic, Sharp, JVC

UMMM, sounds like a -R issue to me.

Thanks a lot for the info!
That means it probably isn't my players, since you had the SAME experience I did with Prassi (which is essentially Stomp).

I just started to think today that maybe Stomp was doing it to make more players work with it, but not necessarily following the 'rules' (if you will) of DVD standard.

I will take some Nero and Stomp discs to Circuit City and Best Buy today to see which discs play in more (or all).
I want my home movies and clips to be usable in as many DVD players as possible ten years from now, so I can pick almost any player I like, based on features and not have to be forced to pick a certain player only for compatiblity reasons...

  6. Hi VEFF, it was your posts that convinced me to get Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5, so I found it interesting to see your post here questioning your method. Here is my experience:

I've burned a Maestro compiled VIDEO_TS folder to a few Memorex DVD+RW discs with my Sony DRU500 1.0f firmware.

Here are the the results trying to playback with my brand new Panasonic CP72 standalone based on the software used to burn each of the discs. My Panasonic is a 5 disc progressive which also includes DVD-Audio capability. What's interesting is that it officially supports DVD-R, but says in the manual that is cannot play +RW or -RW. It plays both just fine though.

Nero 5.5.9.17.0 (UDF 1.02) - says "can't play this type of disc"
RecordNow Max 4.5 - plays wonderfully
DVD Decryptor 3.1.4 (read/write ISO) - plays wonderfully

I used Nero UDF 1.02 mode because of the long thread where it was recommended to increase compatibility with standalone players, especially older ones. Oh well, no such luck.

Since Nero gave me a bad +RW, I didnt take any chances with +R and -R coasters. I've also recorded DVDs with my Sony and RecordNow Max to Maxell DVD-R, Maxell DVD-RW, and Maxell DVD+R. (note - those 3 are Maxell, not Memorex.) All discs played fine on my new CP72 standalone. And the DVD+R and DVD-R play wonderfully on my old Apex 600A also. The old Apex 600A has trouble with the DVD+RW and -RW, although it has read the DVDdecryptor burned +RW after inserting a second time, but froze up near the last chapters. Considering it's an older cheap model, I'm perfectly happy with the results of using the Sony DRU500A with RecordNow Max for all 4 formats when playing back on my new Panasonic CP72. And the 2 write-once formats play good on my old Apex. Bottom line is - I trust DVD Max pretty well so far, but will be making some rounds to test different players wih my +R and -R disks. Let us know how it goes. I might do some additional testing with Nero on the rewritable formats, but see no reason to stop using DVD Max at this time.

Great thanks for the info Jason!
It is posts like yours that help us all understand which methods are the most reliable, espeically with newer players, since we all will eventually have to replace our current players.

Hopefully some more people will post their results (burning software, media type (-R, +R etc.), settings used and home DVD player model).

I didn't get to BestBuy tonight; it was 10 minutes to closing when I was done visiting my parents.
I went to KMart on the way home, since I know they are open later, but they didn't have any power supply for the DVD players.
There was one Panasonic DVD home theater system, by the TV section, but it didn't have a remote. Couldn't tell by the LED display on the unit if it was reading the discs or not.

I will try tomorrow, although my time will be limited.
It looks more and more like Stomp is pretty safe, as I originally thought.
This is what I have been using for all my video DVD discs containing home movies.

I just know that with Stomp it is only UDF and not UDF/ISO; that concerned me, since I believe I read that UDF/ISO was the DVD standard,
    but that could be wrong(?)
However, Stomp does have the "Recognize the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders per the DVD specification" option, which makes me feel better, since that is specifically for DVD video discs, and not data discs...

Stomp has always worked for all three of my home players; I can't say the same of Nero.

As someone else pointed out in another thread, he had never heard complaints (i.e. had never seen posts) about Stomp discs being unreadable, whereas posts did exist, that mentioned Nero issues.visible.

    Hi all

I'm from Poland and please excuse me my not too good English. I have read VEFF's post and I want to share with you my test. I burned dvd video files (VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS) using Nero 5.5.10.0 and RecordNow on the following media: Esperanza DVD-RW, Platinum DVD+RW and Princo DVD-R. I took all these to a store with DVD players and I tested these on few standalone players:

    ...............................................NER O UDF 1.02..............RECORD NOW
    .................................................. +RW..-RW.................+RW..-RW..-R
    SAMSUNG HT-DL70D........................-......-......................+.......-......+
    SAMSUNG HT-DL200........................-.......-.....................+........-......+
    SAMSUNG HT-DM150.......................-.......-.....................+.......+......+
    SAMSUNG DVD-S 324......................-.......-.....................+.......+......+
    SONY DVP-NS305...........................+......+.......... ...........+.......+......+

    and my PIONEER DV-444.................+......+.....................+ ......+......+

    + working
    - not working

    I hope you understand these

Burned using DRU-500A. The same files on all media.

  9. Rubberman, you mentioned you tried UDF and UDF/ISO in Nero, but you didn't mention if you had selected UDF 1.02 in the UDF tab. This could affect your results.

Stanek, your tests show RecordNow Max as much more compatible with various standalones. But I also see your chart says Nero UDF 1.02. If that's the case, then you would need to do another test with Nero UDF/ISO (with UDF tab set to 1.02). I found this makes all the difference with my player. Although some have claimed it "reduces" compatibility.

I just know that with Stomp it is only UDF and not UDF/ISO; that concerned me, since I believe I read that UDF/ISO was the DVD standard,
    but that could be wrong(?)
VEFF, edited I realize that in Stomp that it says UDF format, not UDF/ISO. But, when I view the properties of media in Nero of a DVD that I had burned with my DRU500A in Stomp RecordNow Max 4.5, it says UDF/ISO9660, just like the original DVD, an ISO copy from DVD Decryptor, a UDF/IFO burn with DVDXcopy, and a UDF/ISO burn in Nero. It identified a Nero UDF burned disc as UDF (mode 1), so this information appears to be accurate, which indicates Stomp is actually burning UDF/ISO format, which makes sense, because the Nero UDF discs I burned would not play back in my Panasonic CP72, but the Nero UDF/ISO discs, the RecordNow Max discs, DVDxcopy, and DVD Decryptor burned discs would all play fine. All are identified at UDF/ISO9660 by Nero's media information. So this should make you feel better based on your concern that Stomp might be burning the non-standard UDF format. And I get the same results whether selecting UDF w/joliet or not in RNM. My question is whether Stomp RNM uses UDF 1.02 specifically as this is "optional" in Nero. I don't know how to test for UDF 1.02, 1.05, or 2.01 with software, but it has been indicated that older drives don't support 1.05 or newer.

As to why I was able to create a disc in Nero now that would play, was because I changed the settings based on my own tests and suspicions rather than recommendations I had read on this webboard. I originally took the advice of everyone in this thread:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127624&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight...ysical&start=0
The people posting there who were having success with Nero were all saying to use DVD-ROM UDF 1.02 (not ISO) for best compatibility and that it solved their compatibility problems. So logically, that's what I used, and it didn't work. However, I did some more experimenting on my own, and I found that the following settings created a working disc in Nero 5.5.9.17.0 that would play on my new Panasonic CP72:

    DVD-ROM UDF/ISO
    Check ISO level 1
    Check ISO9660
    Uncheck Joliet
Uncheck anything in "relax ISO restrictions"
    UDF 1.02

So now, I've successfully burned disks with my DRU500A that would playback in my new Panasonic CP72 using the following programs:

    RecordNow Max 4.5
    DVDXcopy 1.3
    DVD Decryptor
    Nero 5.5.9.17.0 (DVD-Rom UDF/ISO) - UDF1.02

And I've had a failures with:
    Nero 5.5.9.17.0 (DVD-Rom UDF) - UDF1.02

I haven't burned a write-once disc yet to test in additional players, so I don't know if RecordNow would still have anything over Nero with the settings I came up with here. Even so, I'm sticking with RecordNow Max.

AFAIK, just UDF FS is the standard FS for Video-DVD. Only for downwards-compatibility more and more Authoring-Studios add the ISO9660 feature, ISO9660 without any other additions like RockRidge etc.

But why offers RNM only TAO mode for DVD and Nero BR offers only DAO mode for DVD?? Anyone a idea?

Big thanks to all here shared their experiences with different players, media, burnprogs! 8)

I have a panasonic lv50 player which only plays discs burned with dvd video in Nero.

The other templates in Nero for dvd will not play in either pc or Nero.

Recordnow disc won't play at all in standalone or pc.

Could someone give me some advice on what I am doing wrong ?

    thanks.

    My setup:
    Sony DRU500a 1.0d
    Princo 2x DVD-R
    Nero 5.5.10.0
    Panasonic A360

I used "DVD Video" compilation and all burns are successfully, no coasters, but very few play in my Panasonic 360.

So, I read about the UDF thingy, so with new hope I changed the UDF to 1.02 (most compatible with older players) --> NONE of the ones burnt with UDF 1.02 would work.

Finally I dropped the Princo 2x media and I burnt 3 Nashua DVD-R's 1x, all 3 play immediately on my Panasonic 360.

It's not the burner or the reader or the software, but it really is the media that gives people a hard time.
