  1. I will be adding a DRU500A to my system, replacing one of my current drives:

    Sony CD-RW CRX175A1
    Sony DVD-ROM DDU1621

The drive I remove will be put into my son's PC as his CD drive recently died.

My question is, which drive should I keep in my system and why?

My gut feeling is to keep the DVD drive which would allow me to dupe DVDs if necessary. Since the DRU500A can burn all formats and the DDU1621 can read all formats I don't see a need for the CD-RW...

    Any flaws in this logic?

It becomes a question of what you are going to be using the drive for. If you are copying dvd's, the DRU will only rip dvd's at 2.1X, whereas your dvd-rom will probably rip much faster.

If you are not going to be copying dvd's, then the best choice might be to keep your writer in the pc because it will probably write cd's at a greater speed than the DRU.

Weigh how you are going to be using your pc against the read and burn speeds of your present drives as compared to the DRU

  4. You can make it external too...

I think it depends of how often do you burn CD. If a lot. I would not use my Sony for that. It was still too expensive to vear it on CD's.

  5. When I bought my Pioneer a04. I removed my DVD-rom and kept my 52 speed cd writer. I dont do any DVD ripping, but I burn a lot of CDR's, this was the best option for me, your circumstances may differ.

  6. I kept the DVD-ROM for now and removed the CD-R - this has helped me verify the DVDs I have made read ok in another drive. I've only done 1 DVD movie but have done several data backup DVDs and I want to make sure they work before possibly deleting them off the HD.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

The only "flaw" in your logic:

I have a DRU-500A, six CD burners (some int, some ext) and three
    DVD-ROM drives.
I ONLY use the DRU-500A to BURN (not read) media and only use it for DVD media (no CD-Rs).
To save wear and tear, I let my cheaper CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives handle everything but DVD burning.
