Here is what worked for me:

SONY DRU-500A Detail media report

This works for me:

Firmware: 1.0f
NeroBurn Version: Don't use it. I used RecordNow DX 4.5 - came with drive
DVD-R Media: ACCU from Meritline
Burn Speed: 2x (30 minutes for a full disk)

AND: No labels on the disks.

Well i havent had any problems at all so far.. and ive done quite a few movies with different combinations of software and dvd's

Firmware: 1.0f
Nero 5.5.9.17
RecordNow Max 4.5
DVD Decryptor (for 1 : 1 copying of dvd's that are 4.3gb discs)
DVD Media: Maxell DVD-R (2.5x)
Maxell DVD+R (2.5x)
Accu DVD-R (1x but burning at 2x)
CompUSA DVD-R (1x)

The one thing ive found out after buying this thing is that there is no "One right way" to do this.. different methods work for different movies. But i have found that i like the DVD2DVD-R software method (using CCE 2.50) to encode movies if they are larger than 4.3GB. Don't now if this helps.. but its just my 2 cents

I have had no problems with my SONY DRU-500A. Didn't upgrade the firmware. I use Ulead DVD Workshop, Nero and WinONCD3.8. My opinion of the software that came with the drive is not good.

I have had this burner for a couple months now and everything i have thrown at it works. I have used
accu 1x
ritek2x after firmware upgrade
memorex dvd-r & dvd+r
I use all types of burning software and authoring software and all works great.

Hi, I've had mine for a month now with hardly any issues. Here's what i've used.

Athlon XP 2100
Corsair DDR 2700 512mb
Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm
WD 30gb 7200rpm
Window XP Pro

Sony DRU500a
Firmware: 1.0f
Nero 5.5.9.17 (don't use any longer but it worked)
RecordNow Max 4.5 (don't use any longer but it worked)
DVD Decrypter (for ripping files and burning images)
DVD Maestro (for authoring and image creation)
IMGTOOL (for creating an image)

DVD Media:
Memorex DVD+RW (2.4x works great)
Sony DVD+RW (2.4x works great)
DVDON DVD+RW (2.4x works great)
DVDON DVD-R (4x only burns at 2x but work great)
Ritek DVD-R (2x works great)
TDK DVD-R (2x works great)
CompUSA DVD-R (2x works great)
Sony DVD-RW (1x works great)

Memorex DVD+R (2.4x DO NOT WORK!!)

I use Maestro to author with if I'm in the mood for menu's and extras otherwise i follow this guide which was posted here a little while back:

No matter what I do I always create an image and burn with DVD Decrypter. I got this tip from this forum also and it hasn't let me down. Hope this helps someone...
