I have a few DVDs that is showing letterbox on my widescreen TV. My guess is that it is somehow not flagged properly when creating the DVD. How do I fix these?
Another possibility is that the black bar are actual image and therefore I might need to crop it out of the picture. Any easy method to do this?

If you are seeing small black bars even on a 16:9 TV
the DVD is a 2.35:1 movie and the small black bars are
hard coded in to the frame.
You could crop out the black bars but you would also have
to crop the sides to keep the aspect ratio.
See here how to turn a 2.35:1 in to 16:9:

What DVD movie would that be?
I have never had this happen to be, so I'm interested.
Maybe you could play around with Letterbox/widescreen setting on the DVD player.
Did you even try the same disc on a different DVD player?
Becuase I think maybe the firmware in the dvd player have a bug in it? -
I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about. I also have a widescreen tv and a few of my DVDs end up looking stretched too. The problem is that they were never encoded as enhanced widescreen or anamorphic. Therefore, you get a 4:3 picture with black bars on the top and bottom that's being stretched on your tv.
Someone mentioned that the black bars are supposed to be there. That's partially correct. Only in the case of a move that's 2.25:1 but a 1.85:1 picture will fit your entire screen.
Now, your tv should have on option to crop the picture. I have a toshiba TV and for mine, the setting is 'Theatre Wide 2'. But if you have a progressive scan DVD player, this option probably won't work seeing as most tv's I've seen don't allow a progressive scan signal to be changed like that.
My progressive scan DVD player that allows me to view movies that are encoded as 4:3 with black bars on the side of the picture. This allows me to see the picture unstretched. Then, for those few movies that are letterbox and not widescreen, I simply use the zoom function on my player thus eliminating the black bars and allowing me to keep the movie in progressive scan.
Someone asked for a example of a movie where this could be a problem (i.e. it's Letterbox), here are a few: Ravenous, Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State.
