I just bought a ATI -TV capture card and no programs seem to be able to use , virtualdub and AVI IO tell me the drivers are not installed right but i can't seem to get rid of them now. And also i get that DMA error message when I turn it on. I dont have a checkbox for DMA is my device manager. Is there a way to enable it in Bios ? Does anybody know if ATi cards are suppposed to work with virtualdub?

Current TV Wonder drivers are WDM drivers, but VirtualDub only supports older VfW drivers. Go to the tools section and download and install the VfW-WDM wrapper driver to use with VirtualDub. You may need a regular TV tuner application to actually tune your card, however. Several popular WDM TV/PVR applications work with the TV Wonder.

I tried the link....doesnt appear to be there anymore... What capture programs do you recommend dude?
-
I dunno' about you, but I just tried the link in Tools and it worked for me.
Cyberlink PowerVCR and Intervideo WinDVR do great MPEG-2 capture with this card, if that is all you want. I have yet to find a really good AVI cap besides the MMC for it. By good I mean clean, simple interface, professional quality software design rather than buggy hacked-together amaturish type stuff (I won't name any names). -
Popsicle_Pete:
I got the WDM wrapper to download fine from the tools section here: http://shopgeo.virtualave.net/wrapper.zip . If this gets VirtualDub working for you, it is a great program to capture to AVI. Virtualdub does have it's own tuner section in it and additionally I found an add-on that acts as a start/stop timer at: http://www.geocities.com/GeoFileSer0002/eigene/VDstartPro1/vdstartpro1.html
ATI cards are compatable with VirtualDub once the drivers are working properly. I have a AIW Radeon 7500 that works great with VirtualDub. I never use the ATI MMC anymore.
As far as setting up DMA in Device Manager, did you go to the hard drives, or the IDE Controllers, if you went to the Hard Drives, it is not there, you should actually find it under the properties for the IDE Controllers.
Have you tried uninstalling the device drivers through device manager, or device manager in safe mode? If not try those, you may be able to get them uninstalled that way. Otherwise you might try reinstalling them over top of themselves.
You say that you get a DMA error message, look in device manager and see if you can track it down through there. In particular a red stop sign or a yellow caution sign indicates something is wrong with that device.
If none of this works as far as DMA, please give us the exact wording of the DMA error next time you post. -

Im looking in control panel / system / device manager, right ? Yeah under the hard disk controllers menu is the IDE controllers. I have 3 of them(primary, secondary and sis 5513 dual PCI IDE controllers ) but none of them had anything with DMA , I looked everywhere. I dont have XP, I jus have 98 ,so mebbe I dont have DMA. And the error message that i get when i start ATI tv says is :
Video capture and TV -on-demand performance will be
degraded on this system as DMA for the hard disk is not
enabled.
Please check the system settings in the windows
control panel for the following devices:
GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE47 (C: )
Dont show this message again OK
Thats all is says, it seems to work OK, but i really want to see what this DMA thing is all about. And ill look into those other programs. The one that comes with it seems to work ok, but some other options would be nice, like when i record to AVI format, I can select what codec I want ,but the settings box is whited out so i can't change anything.
but thanks , hope to hear from u -
Oh ,one more thing.. i downloaded that wrapper thing, do I have to unistall my original drivers? Or do i just install this?
-
Just right-click on the INI file and select Install (I think that's how it worked?). Don't uninstall your current drivers, this is just a wrapper.

Thanks dude. i got it goin...but does is it running on a timer. i installed it, and i had virtualdub working with the cap card, but it only worked for 3 days, then all of a sudden opening the capture window in virtualdub makes my comp crash..lol ........I think all computers should be destroyed, or programmed to be less anal and fussy
