I own a Philips CDRW(800 series) 8x4x32. It burns XVCDs, but I am starting to think that this is not the ideal burner for XVCDs. The XVCDs will not properly play in all these players that I have tested: Pioneer, Panasonic, Philips, GE. They play OK on JVC, Apex(audio drags) and Sanyo. I still don't know what DVD player to get.
Here is my setup:
ATI AIW 128pro
Philips CDRW804
Memorex CR-Rs
AMD 800Mhz processor
Win98ME
Ulead
NERO 5.5

i doubt its your burner, it would screw up data & audio cd's as well. it could be the cd-r discs you are using, try something more expensive with a higher "reflectivity"

which kind of disc have higher reflectivity? Everyone on this forum brags about the Pioneers, so, it seems that something that I am doing is not right. Thanks for the reply, Jeex. -
Hi,
Just a thought, have you tried lowering the burn speed at all?
I have had problems myself with video playback that have been solved by reducing to 4 speed write or lower.
Cheers,

I have no idea why but after trying a boat load of different CD-R's I find out that the Silver-Blue dye CD-R's give no problems at for VCD's. Its also the only ones that on my toshiba 2050 that will play, the APEX DVD players plays anything.
Also the silver-blue work flawless on a konica 1800U also. -
I have lowered the speed to x2 and the XVCDs still don't play properly on the standalones. The JVC is the one that comes closest to playing properly.
I am not even sure what color Memorex CD-R are- I think they are slightly silver, but they look like they have some gold too. Which brand CD-Rs have silver? Thanks again for the responses so far -
I will be going to Circuit City again(3rd time) to test out the players with some VCDs that I made. I have one VCD recorded at x2 speed (an Office Depot 80min CDR) and another one (Memorex CDR). I am hoping that Pioneer will impress me this time. I just want a decent player!!!

well, maybe if they don't play at 2x, then you're doing something wrong burning or encoding. the newer pioneers aren't quite as good as the old ones, i've found that green discs are better at 4x and below, while blue discs have gone up to 10x with no problems.
but any time you make non-compliant discs, there are more variables that can cause problems than just the burn speed. get bitrate viewer, and see how high the peaks go on your XVCD MPEGs. i recommend using the CBR setting on MMC 7.1, it's still variable, but less than VBR, which is really unpredictable.
not all memorex discs are created equal. darker blue is the best, followed by light blue, then green. gold discs (tdk, kodak) are usually the best overall. verbatim are also real good. the memorex dark blue are high quality, but i get mad every time i open a pack of light ones... -
The memorex discs that I have look like a cross between silver and gold (which is sort of a grey I guess). I am going to try some more discs out.
I went to 4 electronic department stores today (SEARS, REX Electronics, Circuit City, and Target). I played my discs on several players (Memorex, Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Apex, JVC, Oritron, RCA, and Philips). The only players that could even play this special disc that made (the video data rate was 2300Kbps/audio was 44100Kbps/224, performance was a level 13) was JVC and Apex. The Pioneer could not handle this XVCD- the video was skipping all over the place and the audio was 4 seconds ahead of the video. The others would not even make an effort to play the disc. Since the JVC and Apex player can play the disc, I really don't know what the problem is. I just wish all players could play my XVCDs properly. I also wish JVC DVD players did not have that "pause" problem during playback on noncompliant XVCDs.
