Hi,
I have tried without success to convert basketball .avi file, captured from Canon ZR45 digicam, to MPEG2. No matter how I set the parameters in TMPGEnc, the mpeg2 file always have trailing horizontal lines of people movement. I don't know if this is the interlace problem or TMPGenc is not good enough. I have tried the setting from the "Configuring TMPGEnc for high quality DVD-compliant MPEG-2" but it is still not good. When I used Video Studio 6 to convert the same avi to MPEG2, I don't see the trailing horizontal lines anymore but the quality is not very good. All the above happened when I watched the MPEG2 file by Media PLayer. I am still waiting for the DRX500UL DVD burner to arrive so I don't know if I would see the same trailing lines on the DVD player. Can some expert shed some light here. I really want to buy the TMPGEnc Plus but I need to know if it will work before committing.
thanks,
Cau

After experimenting with several settings in TMPGEnc and VS6, I finally found out why there are horizontal trailing lines. In VS6, when saving MPEG2 file ot NTSC DVD, there is an option to select "Frame setting", there are three choices: frame based, field order A or field order B. TMPGEec doesn't have this option. (This is not part of the source type seting which is seperate). Can someone with the register version or Plus version let me know if TMPGEnc has that option. I heard a lot of good comment on TMPGEnc but so far can't make it work.
thanks,

Forgot to mention that in VS6 if I set the frame as field orderA or field order B, I see the same problem (trailing lines) as in TMPGEnc. Stting the the frame as "frame-based solve the problem. In TMPGEnc, I guess the equivalent is interlace or non-interlace but I see trailing lines with either setting.

TMPGenc does have a setting for field order, which is probably whats causing your issue. You'll find it by clicking the SETTNG button, and then the ADVANCED tab.
Your VIDEO SOURCE setting MUST be set to Interlaced for this setting to have any affect, according to the documentation. If your source is set to Non-Interlace, then this will have no affect.Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
As I mentioned in my second post, this setting is not for the source, it is for the output. For the source I tried both interlace, filed A, and fieldB, and non-interlace and all having trailing lines. I suspect the trailing line is due to I watch the MPEG2 on the PC monitor. If I burn on a DVD disk and watch on TV, the problem might go away. I still wait for Dell to ship me the DVD burner. Do you see trailing line while watching on the PC monitor.

Having re-read your original post, I noticed your source file is from a cam, meaning it's interlaced. The lines your seeing are probably just interlace lines, and yes, they should go away when you watch it on a TV. Because your source is true interlace, then you should probably leave it 'as is'. If this isn't an option, or you plan to watch this on a PC, you can deinerlace the file, but this may introduce artifacts of it's own. VirtualDub, and AVISynth offer good deinterlace filters. Try a small sample and see if the end result is something your interested in.

The interesting is when watching on PC, I can only these trailing lines when using TMPGEnc. I don't see the same problem using Video Studio 6 or Main Concept. I am still interested in making TMPGEnc work since the quality seems a little better with TMPGEnc. I would say 10 to 9 compared to VS6 or Main Concept.

Some software players will deinterlace your output video, making it appear to be progressive, when the source is actauly interlaced. If your not going to view it on a PC, then I wouldn't waste too much time or effort on it.
