XviD is a free, open-source implementation of MPEG-4. It's similar to DivX. AVI is just a wrapper, an AVI file can have video encoded with DivX, XviD, or any one of a large number of other codecs (including uncompressed RGB).
http://xvid.org/ has quite a lot of information, including a FAQ page with "what is xvid". -
It doesn't blur as much as divx does, at lower and the same bit rate. XVID is, overall, better than Divx, and Divx Pro. It is just a bit more advanced, so you'll need to get a guide at a site like http://www.doom9.org/ . You'll also want to get either Nic's binaries, or Koepi's binaries, which include a guide or two, and the codec. Very simple install too.
XVID = Divx on steroids = BETTERER
