XviD is a free, open-source implementation of MPEG-4. It's similar to DivX. AVI is just a wrapper, an AVI file can have video encoded with DivX, XviD, or any one of a large number of other codecs (including uncompressed RGB).

http://xvid.org/ has quite a lot of information, including a FAQ page with "what is xvid".

  3. It doesn't blur as much as divx does, at lower and the same bit rate. XVID is, overall, better than Divx, and Divx Pro. It is just a bit more advanced, so you'll need to get a guide at a site like http://www.doom9.org/ . You'll also want to get either Nic's binaries, or Koepi's binaries, which include a guide or two, and the codec. Very simple install too.

XVID = Divx on steroids = BETTERER
