Ok guys I need some help. I bought the DV-333 based on everyones comments here. I then tried to play a vcd in it and it doesnt even recognize the disc. It just spits it out. I verifed that the VCD worked in my Apex and it played fine. I then took the player to a repair shop who said that everyone was fine and Pioneer only guarantees store bought vcds...blah...blah...blah... I am burning with a Plextor 48x and using TDK cds. Any ideas on why this isnt working or what could be done differently?

If a 8x burn does not work then the unit is broken. I have one and it plays everything I've thrown at it sans a few problems on el-cepo media had a breakup or two.
Nero, VCDeasy, VCD, SVCD non standard you name it, just don't go over 2x ( ~2700 combined ) and you will be fine. -
So are you saying that I am burning at too high of speeds and to not go over 2X burning speeds? Any comments on how fast others are burning vcds at?

You are burning probably at too high speed. I have DV-333 too but have a lower CD-write (4X). My Pioneer plays every X/S/VCD I made.
Try writing at lower speed.ktnwin - PATIENCE -
I have the DV-333. The Nero I have (5.5.4) only has 8x as the min speed.
I was able to play music CD's burned at this speed. I downloaded VCDEasy (freeware - see link from tools on left sidebar) to do burning and a 2 SVCD's burned at 1x speed played without problems -
I recenly ran into exactly the same problem you had. The VCD play fine on a loaned Apex but not on my Pioneer DV-333.
It's turn out to be the CD-R media. I made an exact copy of it on Memorex CD-R media and my Pioneer plays it fine.
The Apex appears to be more tolerant about different brands of CD media but it usually plays with audio trailing way behind the video.
To me this look likes: in the Apex, light go much faster than sound ? Just kidding.ktnwin - PATIENCE
