if i am doing 75meg/sec high def .. CBR is good ...

since you didnt supply much info on what you're doing ... hard to say ..

but generally for most people here -- 2 pass (or more) VBR is best except on TMPGenc there is a large group of people including the author who say CQ is best quality ..

but as a given - at lower bit rates -- dont use CBR ever ..

  3. ok, i want to put 2 movies on one DVD+RW
each movie is 2gb (2000bitrate) should i use CBR or VBR?
befor i asked this question i was doing CBR (as normal) and the quality was good...if VBR is better than i will use it.

    if each movie is already 2 gig ... well 2 + 2 = 4 which will fit as is on a dvd-rw ..

if something is already encoded .. RE-encoding it is never going to make it better (other than the possaibility of doing some filtering) ..

IF you're starting from scratch, and

IF your movie is 2GB (how do you know this?), with high enough quality for the chosen bitrate, and

IF nothing else is going onto the disc, then...

You've got room to play with bitrate, filesize doesn't seem to matter.
Encode time does matter to some people--CBR is much faster than VBR.

If you know your movie is 2GB because you've backed up your original, don't waste time or quality by re-encoding it.

If you don't mind taking the time to do it---VBR. Hands down.

yes, but if you encode (VBR or CBR) and use a bitrate calc to figure out your bitrate (obviously constrained to max filesize of 2GB) you just plug in the needed BR into the encoder setting (CBR) or encoder avg BR setting (VBR). Then run.

I always use 2 pass VBR (max 2520, min 1 & average 1150 or less depending on how much I need to fit on a disc) and I'm pretty happy with how my VCDs turn out but how do you predict the finished file size when using CQ?
