I'm running W98SE and not 2000 and W98SE automatically detected my Sony DRU500a without me having to install any drivers. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I throught W98SE and above (2000, XP) would automatically detect and make available this device without having to install any drivers. Basically, the DRU500a is treated as anyother ATAPI device under Windows. While I didn't have to install anything to read CDs and DVDs in the drive, I did however have to install software to be able to write to CDs and DVDs. I have Nero, MyDVD and RecordNow installed and have successfully used all three to write to DVDs.

rkr is right, 2k sp3 will have no problems finding it, go through the device manager and see if there are any conflicts, otherwise i have no clue why it would be doing this, also a side note, i would upgrade to 2k or xp, personal opinion alot more stable via the kernel !

I'm planning to upgrade to W2000 Pro over the Holidays. I'm waiting for a delivery of a 50-pack of CD-Rs. I have around 20 to 30-GBs of files associated with home movies of my son and wife that I wish to backup first. Then I planning to re-format both drives and do a clean install of W2000 Pro. However, I just dread having to re-install all of my applications.
