  1. I made a VCD by converting AVI file to MPEG file and burned it to CD using Nero. Then when I went to play it on my stand-alone DVD Player that is hooked up to my TV, it kept trying to load it but would not play it. I looked at the manual for my DVD player and it says it will play VCD's up to version 2.0. I have no idea what they mean by that. Can anyone please help this poor confused newbie??? Thanks.

  2. 2 possibilities.

    1. You burned your mpeg as data and not as VCD. Did you choose the VCD icon in nero or did you click on the CDROM icon.

    2. Your DVD player will not play CDR's, or at least not the ones you are using. What DVD player do you own.

  4. Thank you both for responding! I definitely chose the VCD option in Nero. I have a Sharp DVD player but not sure which model, but I can check when I get home from work.

I used the program AVI2VCD to encode from the AVI file to the MPG file.

What is so confusing is the language in my DVD's manual that said it will play VCD's up to version 2.0. What do they mean by Version 2.0? Version 2.0 of what?? So what I am wondering does that mean it will only play MPEG1 files and not MPEG2 files?

well a VCD is an mpeg1 and mpeg2 is for SVCD or DVD. regarding Version 2.0 that is the version of VCD created. that is what all current burning programs will create, nero, etc...

  6. Thanks for the explanation. I found out my DVD player is a Sharp DV-600U so I looked that up on this board's report section and found out that it will play VCD's but only ones created on CDR-W disks, not on CDR disks, according to what other users were saying. So I am going to try to create another VCD tonight using the CDR-W disk. Hopefully it will work and I'll post my results.

    Thanks again
