Hello,
I have had some problems with my Sony DRU-500a. I burned 4 DVD-Rs and 3 CD-Rs one day and the next whenever i try and burn a CD-R it uses 100% CPU. I have tried everything (different IDE channels, Different versions of NEro, Different Versions of Windows and a reformat). Anybody have this problem. Also,Which should I use for DVD-R, Ritek or ACCU. I know there is a hundred posts about this but i still dont have an answer. I have heard ACCUs are pixelated on DVD players and i dunno about Ritek. Or should I go for another brand. Or should I stick with name brands (which ones?)

My ACCU DVD-Rs have been ok for the most part - they play in 2 of the 3 players I have. I'd like to try DVD+R if I can find some reasonable media.
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -
I really don't know what could be causing 100% CPU during CD-burning(Is it only CD-Burning, or DVD-burning as well). I'll tell you my configuration maybe you can compare. Outside of that, I couldn't tell you what your problem is.
Sony DRU500a: Master Channel with a second DVD-ROM as the slave. Both are UltraMode 2 DMA. This is important, because if you have the SONY as slave OR another component as slave that is not UltraMode 2 then that IDE channel will only run as fast as the slower of the two.
Nero: Under preferences I have the "ultra buffer" checked where it states automatically done.
Hope this helps.
Also, go with purple bottom Riteks. I have heard many success stories with them and the Sony. Plus, I just ordered 25 of them so they better work. -
I assume its just Nero 5.5.10 that comes (sadly) with a few bugs this time.
The fixed version should be out within the next days, I've read. -
I have used every version of NERO. The funny part is it worked one day and not the next, reformatted still dident work. but the drive works on 4 different other machines.

I'm having 100% success now with DVDXCOPY 1.3 for the rip, RecordNow for the burn (no Nero), and Memorex DVD+R ($2.00 at BestBuy - slightly cheaper than the RITEK). The Memorex DVD-R has never worked for me. The inexpensive ACCUs work in my PC DVD ROMs but unfortunately they pixelate in my DVD players.

i retract most of my previous posts, thanks for your help everybody. I figured out it works perfectly w/ dvd but i only get 100% cpu when burning a CD, so its not so big anymore. but overall, Ritek or ACCU, or who ha had good luck with any brand name dvd-r. I have use Fujifilms DVD-R with total success but Memorex DVD-R w/ zero success.

I just burned a multisession DVD+RW (TDK) in Nero 5.5.10.0 and my P4-1.9 CPU usage was pegged for the entire burn. I have XP Pro SP1. It's sitting on it's own channel as master on a Promise Ultra100 IDE controller. When I boot up, it does show it with DMA on.
I wonder if this is why I can't burn my Ritek 4x at 4x. -
In ToddB case, reason was "Promise Ultra100 controller". Moving to motherboard's IDE chanell helped.
