Is there a way to get video out from firewire port? I need to "play" a .avi and connect my Dvd recorder to record it. Philips 890 has iLink in. Is there any software how does this? I know that Avid can do it but you have to use a "software" key that cost 55000 USD! Insane. Any ideas??

  2. I-Link contains video information but not as video in the conventional sense - it's just part of the data screaming down that little (usually) grey and purple cable, along with the sound data, timecode, control codes etc etc etc.

So in short, the "video" is not playable without some sort of conversion. You can probably buy a bridge (eg http://www.miranda.com/product.php?i=55&l=1) but expect a juicy price tag to go with it... alternatively a PCI based IEEE-1394 card will cost you a lot less (I've seen them here in the UK for about £30) and they often come with some basic editing software to pull the data off of your firewire equipped source and convert them into a more accessable and playable format, such as an AVI or MPEG, that can be played off of your hard disk.

You might even find you can capture firewire straight into a DVD authoring package, in which case a DVD +/- R drive in your PC might be a lot easier. Cheaper and more flexible, too.

(I take it from your post that you have a standalone DVD recorder)

    Hope that helps.

You can output video through i-link, just like when you return your edited video back to your digital camera. Lots of program's can, try DVIO (freeware), you can select between DV type 1 or type 2.
I read on a german site: "Im Gegensatz zu anderen DVD-Recordern können Sie außerdem Ihre Camcorder-Aufnahmen digital über die I-Link-Verbindung auf DVD übertragen."
This means you can hook up your camera to the dvd-recorder, and record the video. So I guess you first have to convert your video to DV-avi, and then output it to your DVD.
If this doesn't work maybe you can first put it on your digital camcorder and then to your dvd.

    Hope this helps.
Just because you aren't paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you!
