problems with avi conversion

Trying to convert an avi to a mov or anything that a mac will read. The avi in question will open olny in win media player (not in real or quick time or any conversion freeware ive tried) They all say "error opening file". Any know how to solve my problem?

It is most likely that the avi you have is a MP43 or Mpeg4version3.
Suggest you get a programme called GSpot it is available from www.divx.com for free . And it will tell you all the information you need to know about your avi. I haven't got a mac but I am assuming your problem is the one I encountered recently with avi's
