    DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a none rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 87% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 68% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
    DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

    DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a none rewritable format and it is compatible with about 81% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 68% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
    DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.
That information is found in the DVDR section of this site.

    DVD-R = Win
    DVD+R = Lose

    Seriously. Stick to DVD-R.

  5. Both formats are likely to loose as neither are very compatible with DVD players. Also price and recording capacity are going against them. Look out for high cap Blue Laser DVD's in the next few years.

DVD-R and DVD+R are only interim formats. They will not make people junk their VHS machines.

I would say that you are very wrong DVD+R is easly the best, the only thing going against it at the moment is the price of media but what do you expect when it's the newer of the two.

There is no point in waiting for the next format to come out, thats like saying "Look out for translucent disk in the next few years" when Blue Laser DVD comes out. Also there may be more than one standard when blue laser comes out too.

I would suggest that you get a DVD recorder which can record on to both standards, DVD-R(W) and DVD+R(W) like the "Sony DRU-500a".

    Best Regards
