Nope - wrong on most points!
First, the size of the AVI has very little (if indeed any) to do with the size of the resulting mpeg. What matters are duration (of original) and bitrates (of output).
To calculate what bitrates to use for a SVCD, you use a bitrate calculator, entering length of the movie, and, if the calculator has this option, enter how many CD's of what size you're willing to use. You then get audio and video bitrates available to you. You find a good assortment of caculators under TOOLS.
After encoding, you can use Nero in VideoCD mode or, much preferred by many (including myself), VCDEasy to author and burn a SVCD.

Take a look at the howtos/convert (left) for more details regarding avi to SVCD.

And, by the way, you may actually succeed with the mpeg size you got if you use 90 min CD-R's!

  3. thanks i didnt know i need to change the bitrates and such because the file is way to big for a cd. can i get the same results though if i use nero to make the svcd and let nero encode then burn.then resason i ask is casue after encoding nero comes out to 702mb on the same cd so its already done everything for me.

Nero has no option to change bitrates, as it's primarily a tool for burning stuff to a CD-R(W). Again, read the HOWTOs on avi to SVCD. Nero can, under ideal circumstances, encode an AVI to SVCD compatible mpeg, but is considered the worst encoder out there. If your aim is to get good results, there are no "onestep pointandclick" methods.

  5. yeah doing that now actually encoding again with tmpg and then will continue with the walthrough to the left. now it shows that after adjsuting to fit 98% of the 80 min cd the time fits but still its over the 700mb will that actually fit though.

Nope, you can actually fit nearly 800 MB of MPEG movie on a 80 min CD, when you burn as (S)VCD. (700MB on a 70 mon CD, 900 MB on a 90 min...)
This has been discussed many times before, but in short the data is written to the CD without all the error correction bits and bytes, leaving more room for the actual data.

Don't use IRC much, but hangs around here quite a lot - I'll probably read your post, and if not, you could always leave a private message.
