  1. Hi,

I am using PowerBook G3 "pismo" firewire, and want to edit video. My HD is only 10 Gig and not enough. I would like to buy an external drive 80 Gig FireWire, but wonder if it's going to work smoothly. Or should I buy an internal one 40 Gig?

Are there any specific issues I should be aware of, when thinking about editing video? What is most important to consider?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

  2. I have an 80gb external firewire hd and it works great. It basically just like a normal hd but you cant take it everywhere cause you gotta plug it in. Its from Ezquest and I got it from macWarehouse. I wanted to get an internal one, but apple told me that they dont suggest doing that because its not good for the computer, especially a laptop.

I have an external 40 and it works great for me. I've never had a single problem with it.

  4. thanks guys for the replies, seems as if I will get an external one

I also thought it's better and faster than the internal version. Also much more storage for the money.

just make sure you have either os 9.2.2 or osx, anything pre os 9.2.2 sucks for ext. fw drives. and also i would get the biggest drive you can afford. cause you will always need the space. i have an ezquest drive that's great and a transint'l drive. www.ezq.com and www.transintl.com

  6. Just make sure not to buy a maxtor, if you value your data, IMO. I've had two external maxtors (still got one of them) that don't spin up from time to time, I think the read arm has stuck to the disc surface. I have to knock on it or bang it against the table for it to "de-stick".

But it's really quiet on the other hand, credit for that. You really want a quiet one.

oh also, make sure it's 7200 rpm's, or else don't use it for editing.

  8. hey great,

what about the latest LaCie drives? They are 7200 rpm's and seem ok. Anyone some experience with those?

    thanks

You could also buy a 7200 internal IDE drive and put it into an external firewire case. In my case, I got an 80 GB 2700 rpm Seagate IDE drive and a firewire case. The bundle is working properly and it was cheaper that other options available at that time.

  10. Purplegrain,
Also, if external , make sure that the enclosure has the Oxford 911 chip. Ask for it. It is way faster than previous IDE bridges, and although most enclosures are starting to come with them, a lot of them still have the old one.

I have a Western Digital 60 gig/7200 rpm in an external firewire enclosure. No problems at all.
