Rip to the internal drive and then move it to the external. Or does it matter. I have always ripped to my internal hard drive, and then moved it to my external hard drive.

Depends on the interface - USB will rip slower than firewire.

As far as quality, it doesn't really matter right? I don't care about the speed.

You can choose whichever is the better for you, internal/external/network storage etc. The encoding won't run with worse results.
The difference and bottleneck will be only the writing speed between your DVD and USB.

The internal drive has SMART support, would that matter when ripping?

if u like the noise of your external drive 7 hours straight i suppose it's ok.
Moreover, external drives are prones to i/o errors in my experience.*** DIGITIZING VHS / ANALOG VIDEOS SINCE 2001**** GEAR: JVC HR-S7700MS, TOSHIBA V733EF AND MORE -
The drive speeds are the same. One rip usually takes 6 to 10 minutes. I'm just more concerned about the accuracy of the external drive.

Why have wear-and-tear on the internal drive when you are just going to move the file anyway? I have several external drives that I use strictly for video and have never had a single problem ripping to them. Go directly to the external. The rips speed is the same, I don't see any advantage with the 2-step method.

Plus, I just realized my external has the 16MB cache, where as my internal is only 8MB.

None of this matters -- just rip to your drive of choice.
