I just bought a Pioneer DVR-A05(Only PC programs came with it) and swapped it with my DVD-rom. When I tried to start my Powermac G4 with Mac OSX it just frose on the startup. I had to reset my machine and start it with OS 9.2. I also tried to update OSX superdrive patch before i change the DVD-rom drive with DVR-A05, but it said that it couldnīt update this machine, probably because it was just a DVD-rom in the machine. It will not start from an OSX CD either.
Have anyone else out there with an older G4 bought this Pioneer DVD-R/RW drive? Please tell me if there is a driver update or something out there for a macintosh. I know that the new PM G4 machine ships with the pioneer DVR-A04, so this drive should be compatible.

I have the Pioneer AO5 in my DUAL 1G mirrored along with a TDK 40X CD burner, I've had no problems as of yet. I am not able to burn a bootable CD for OS9 but I only use 10.2 anyways so it's not an issue for me. I would suggest checking the jumper settings, I changed them on the AO5 drive before i installed it. Make sure it matches the jumper postition on the AO4 drive.

    Good Luck

It sounded like he didn't upgrade from an A04 drive, he originally had the drive that can read dvd's but not write them. So in this situation will Mac OS X treat the A05 drive just like it would've treated the pre-installed A04 drive (run iDVD, etc)? How'd you tweak the jumper settings?

I'll Look tonight and let you know which set of pins are jumped in my machine. I believe I took it off Master and used Cable Select instead. The drive has worked fine in my machine so far, I can boot of OSX disks, burn music and data,PC/MAC CD's. I have not tried DVD's yet, but Toast 5.2 recognizes it as an AO5 drive and looks like it will burn DVD's fine. Now I just need 4XDVD-R Media that won't cost an arm/leg.
