  1. I am going to convert a lot of videos from VHS to CD.

I am think about the format to use... the videos I am going to convert are about 2 hours, so it will be 2 disc if I choose VCD or SVCD.

The resouliton of a VHS tape matches the VCD, so if I use SVCD I am wasting space, cause the only thing I would be doing is rescaling the video image. I am wrong? I also think that the image maybe have better quality because uses MPEG-2 (in SVCD) instead of MPEG-1, but I dont know very well what is the best solution.

If someone can help... thanks in advance

  2. SVCD looks much better than VCD in my opinion. Also, VHS is not the same resolution as VCD. VHS is analog and each scan line does not directly translate into a single pixel line. VCD will look much more pixelated, an SVCD can look nearly identicle to the VHS source. The downside is that an SVCD can only hold about 45 min.

You can get really great results using SVCD encoding with a 352x480 (NTSC) frame size instead of 480x480. If your software and player will allow (try a test) set the audio to 48kHz instead of the 41kHz standard. My system plays this as an SVCD and the file can easily be converted (with no re-encoding) to a DVD at a later date.
