Looking for a new DVD player for the home theater. It has to have SVCD and VCD support. I have a $200 budget here. Id like a nice one.
Progressive scan is a +
My friends DVD player says it supports VCD, but it wouldn't play any of the movies I burn. Same movies worked fine on other players with VCD & SVCD support... weird.

I would recomend the Sampo 612,it has played every XSVCD I've made including some done at a 6000VBR rate. It has played everything I've tried including miniDVD. It's about $100.00 but is not progressive scan.

CD-R and CD-RW compatibility is a separate ability to VCD / SVCD compatibility. It is just as if not MORE important if you intend on playing back home-made discs.

and it can play anything and is roughly $200 -
yg1968,
Do you know if Philips 724 can play DVD-R & -RW? I've found one for a good price from an on-line retailer and I don't want to buy one and find out that it's not campatible. I have a Pioneer A04 burner. The compatibility list here is not that conclusive. Any information would be appreciated.

My GE 5803P (3 disc changer) I got for about 100$ did play all (X)(S)VCD's I ever threw at it... There might be better, but it sure isn't a bad buy at the price.

Falberni,
I know that it is compatible with DVD+R and+RW. I don't know about DVD-R or DVD-RW. -
The DVD player section did a great job of telling us which make/model can play what format/disc type.
For a good player, it have to be versatile, and have good video quality.
So pick those can play all the formats, and then check out the reviews on their playback quality.
Once upon a time, Apex and Pioneer are among the most popular. People do pay $50 to $70 for a pioneer for its better video quality. Maybe they also have a better TV, which help to highlight video quality problem. -
Get the Kiss DVD player from www.scan.co.uk. It has one of the best compatiblity list and even plays DIVX movies!

Isn't this KISS player dead yet? It's absolutely and completely pointless and useless (by me), as it's overpriced, and won't play 99% of DivX movies out there... No divx 3/4 without reencoding, probably don't like odd resolutions and framerates, lots have odd codecs (WMA, OGG...), no support for xvid, not really upgradeable (probably is, but it won't support everything including mpeg4 and everything anytime soon), this one has been discussed many many times. I rate it as "avoid". you can get a basic PC at this price that will do a better job imho. Most likely, you're looking for a shinco clone anyways (apex and the like)...

To add to the list:
My Mustek 562 has played everything I've thrown at it-
x(s)vcd, cvd, miniDVD,cdr/w,dvdr/w,mp3, pictureCD, etc.
Plus odd framesizes, GOPs, audio tracks, high bitrates all seem to play fine.
Its sold under many names, and usually sells $70. They make a progressive version for $90, but I forget what it is called.
It would be the perfect player if it did not have the chromo bug (which nearly all players have except for panasonics).

Basically, you can assume that NO DVD player will play back DivX. If it did (and apart from the odd exceptions mentioned above, none do), you'll probably know about it.
