As you haven't provided your computer specs, it's as easy to answer as "How long does it take to get to Kuala Lumpur?"

It depends on a lot of parameters, but to give you some point of reference, my system (PIV 1700) turns out VCD compliant MPEGs from DivX using TMPGEnc at a rate about 0.8-0.7 times real time: 1 hr movie takes about 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min.

TMPGEnc is very good, free (for MPEG1) and reasonably fast.
CCE is also good, expensive and very fast.

  3. Like mats says, could take anything from <1 hour to 30+ hours, depending on source file, motion search precision, filters applied, software used and of course speed of PC. My athlon XP1900 will do a 90 minute film in just over an hour with high quality motion search precission using TMPGEnc.

  5. But if you watch 'em thru a video output on your PC, then it's 0 seconds as there's no reencoding. Also no conversion will give you better quality picture. The DivX copy also has better resolutions... Oh well, comes down to preferences.

Not much good if you want to lend it to someone to watch on a DVD player though.

Well, most people I lend stuff to would rather have it in DivX honestly, for most of 'em have S-video outs on their computers, and either don't have a DVD player, or they don't play *VCD's. Then again, I could give 'em a VHS tape, but I got rid of my VCR a long time ago.
