Each time I play an AVI file, the PC slows down massively. I can't see any problems in the Task Manager.

    Any suggestions?

    Win2KPro, Intel P4-2.26GHz 512MB Ram

PS, DivX files play OK. In fact, all other file types play fine!

  2. Playing video is a drain on system resources particularly if it is uncompressed video. What do you expect ?

PS divx is a type of AVI file

What do I expect? Are u on something?

My machine is a video-editing PC, I've been editing digital and analog video for 12 months now on this PC. It's just recently started with the problem.

Check the machine specs next time you blow-off.

2 posts and already has an attitude. Chill out man and next time I wouldn't advise venting on a forum moderator.

  6. Hi,
If it's only recently that your PC slows down when it plays AVIs, I would suggest you defrag your hard drive. Hope that helps.

    Who blew off ?

Just stating a fact that playing uncompressed video is a drain on system resources. A 720x576 uncompressed video is 20MB/sec. On my PC playing a video with those specs is between 30-40% of cpu usage. If you have other cpu intensive tasks running as well, you will notice things slow down, it is inevitable, to what extent the slowdown is, obviously depends on pc specs. From your posts I gather the slowdown is beyond what should be expected from your PC. And you didn't state in your first post that this was a recent occurence. Have you recently insatlled any hardware or software that could be causing conflicts and effecting your PC's performance.

    Thanks Craig & others.

FYI, I assumed it was the fact that I had, somehow, lost the dvsvd codec (I own a Sony MiniDV camera). I tried removing other codecs from my PC, but they kept re-appearing (in case it was a conflict-problem).

I tried to search for the DVSVD codec on the web, but could not find it. Frustrated, I installed WinXP. All seems OK now. Here are some specs for you:

    AVI file:
    Size: 534 MB
    Codec: DvSvd
    Res: 720x576 @ 25 fps
CPU usage while playing in WMP 8.00.00.4477 is 12%

    Thanks again.

A better attitude will sure help getting helpful answers, besides, you can't EXPECT help, people don't owe you nothing, they're only doing this to help, and it's free.
