I have been looking through the loads of great info on the site and I have some difficulty understanding the resolutions for different video files.

From what I gather, the res for PAL is 352x288 for VCD and 480x576 for SVCD. I don't get why for SVCD the height is longer than the width. I suppose the height would be automatically resized when viewing on a TV, but wouldn't it look really weird when viewing it on a computer? What am I missing here?

Also, are there any standards or recommendations for resolutions of DivX files?

    Thanks!

  2. A pixel on a TV is not square, plus a TV is interlaced.

If you played it back on a computer and ignored the aspect ration
when it will look a little stretched out.

But a good media player adjust the aspect ratio on the fly while
    displaying.

What would the aspect ratio be adjusted to and how does the player calculate it?
