possibly very stupid newbie questions

i have some movies on cdr (vcds?) and some of them i can can copy the files straight to my hard drive then just write em to cd in windows
but a couple wont let me copy the DAT file ( i /o error or something ?)
to my hardrive
is there certain software i need to do this?
and how can you tell if you have vcd svcd divx or whatever?

try vcdgear and it will send the dat file to your hardrive as an mpeg this may or may not work but is my best advice
