I have windows XP pro, cenydne 16x dvd rom, but its actually a liteon ltd163d when listed in device manger..
I'm assuming its device 0 in the secondary ide properties (cuz I have it set to master)..
I have transfer mode to (dma if available)
But the Current transfer mode remains PI0 Mode..?
Device 1 has current transfer mode as "Multi-Word DMA mode 2" , since my cd-rw is set to slave thats must be the setting for this drive, correct?
My chipset is: VIA694 - 42302e31 award medallion..
Any thoughts?

With WindowsXP it turns out that if it gets to many
read errors it turn PIO on forever.
Unplug the drive and reboot the pc.
I'm not sure if you need to supply another drive for
a short time or you can plug in the same drive after a few reboots. -
A little follow-up on tonyp12's suggestion,
Before you go thru the steps of disconnecting the drive make sure you delete it out of the device manager first. Then shut down and disconnect it and then reboot. You might have to do this twice if it still appears in the device manager after rebooting. Afterwards shut down, reconnect the drive and boot up. Make sure you have your Windows CD handy in case it calls for a driver. After your system re-recognizes the drive you might have to re-enable DMA, but you should be good to go after that. One word of advice though, if the drive continues to send error messages Windows will once again disable DMA on the drive at which point you might want to consider replacing it.Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack
