  1. Hi,
is it possible to get the same high quality from a High quality divx as it is from a DVD to Divx, ???
I have a lot of downloaded SVCDs ripped from dvd , but when I try to convert Divx to SVCD at 2 pass VBR in TMPEnc from a high quality divx I get a faint scn line through the movie when played back on TV unlike DVD to SVCD which plays perfect.
    TIA

I'm not sure what you mean by scan lines, and to offer any realistic help it would be necessary to know what settings you are using in TMPG. I convert to SVCD from DVD and DivX, and I don't see much difference between them.

However, DivX is potentially a higher quality format than SVCD, so it is possible with a high quality DivX to get a high quality SVCD. I would hesitate to say the exact same high quality as a DVD to SVCD encode, because DVD to SVCD is one encode, and DVD to DivX to SVCD is 2 encodes.

  3. I use the TMPGEnc templates with just changes to the average bit rate (normally around 1850 or above and min bit rate of 400)
The quality I get is great on the computer playback, it is on my 32" Panasonic tv that I get minute jaggies which are easy to see on angled lines (Like a door frame viewed at 45 degress looks like in a high res video game with jaggies running along what should be a straight line)
I never have this problem in playback of downloaded svcds ripped from dvd.
As I said above, this is only present on tv playback, on pc playback these lines are not present, so I am thinking there is something not set correct in TMPGEnc for converting divx , maybe the interlace settings or maybe I should be using a filter for the interlace of divx to svcd ??
    Thanks for any advice

The average bitrate is obviously dictated by the movie, but I successfully used a max. of 2520 and a min. of 700 for many encodes, with the standard (unlocked) SVCD template. What may be worth trying is to isolate a clip exhibiting jaggies using TMPG's source range setting, and experiment with the minimum bitrate. You might also try CQ mode with the same min and max settings, and a quality setting between 75 and 85. I tended to prefer CQ over 2-pass VBR because of the speed issues, but some people think CQ will give the best result using TMPG. But you will have to experiment to get the quality setting to give your desired filesize!

As to interlace, DivX is not interlaced, so video source type should be progressive, field order is not relevant, and encode mode should be non-interlaced. So this may be your problem. And filters should not be required, and in any case will slow down the encoding considerably.
