When finishing the backup of a DVD to DVDR you are supposed to "get VTS-sectors" in IFO-Edit. WHY ? I forgot this one time and the movie worked fine in my stand alone player.![]()

99% of the time it will. But I'll give you a recent example of why. I did I backup of a Real Genius (its dvd5) and just copied the movie right off with DVD decrypter. After burning The main menu would load but RIGHT after it finsihed loading the second menu (either auto or subs or something I can't remember) would fill half of the screen. Then I remembered I never got VTS sectors and after doing that it worked.
I've heard people say you never have to do it with a DVD5 but after my experiance the other day I do it everytime because hey its like 5 seconds and might save me a disk. -
I agree with flaystus, go ahead and get vts sectors for all copies. From my experience about 75% of dvd5s do not need this step to play, I believe these are the ones that make no changes when you get vts sectors. Better to be safe than sorry. I have never had a dvd5 fail to play perfectly after getting vts sectors. When I was learning I copied quite a few dvd5s that would not play- before I began using ifoedit.

Ok, now I'm confused. I believe I'm asking the same question as burlington but: What does "Get VTS Sectors" actually do to the stream. I guess I don't see the difference from using dvd decryptor to get the files from a dvd5 disk versus authoring your own set of ifos and vobs. I don't have to do a "Get VTS sectors" on those (or should I?)
Are you copying the entire disk or just the main movie? If thats the case, I can understand why. -
Get VTS verifies that the control data listed in the "VTS_0X_0.IFO" is correctly mapped to its corresponding VOBs. Sometimes (don't as me why) the address recorded for the start or end of a scene is incorrect. There was one time I forgot to "get vts" on a movie I just burned. When played in a DVD player the movie would always start about five minutes into the first chapter. Oops.
If you just authored a movie in Spruceup or any other app then I don't think "get VTS" is nessesary. But is you use IfoEdit to rebuild a movie then I suggest you get into the habit of using it to avoid problems.
I hope this helps,
D
