The VCD I got and tried to play has a .VCD extention. Windows Media Player does not play that file extention. Is there some other software I should get to be able to play all VCD's or at least that file extention?

VCD movies contain read only files and can't be altered. Also, I am looking for software that will automatically play it so I don't have to change the extention ever time.

There is no such thing as a VCD file (at least not VCD as in Video Compact Disc). A VCD is CD, containing files and folders of certain types in a certain structure, burnt to the CD in a specific manner.
A VCD file, if it is at all in this ball park, might very well, as geek rock suggests, be a bin, ready to be written to a CD to create a VCD
