  1. Hi
I have a pioneer dcs 303, I bought it already chipped (auto selects). My friend also has the same player but not chipped.

Wheres his happly plays anything thrown at it mines is a bit more selective.

Would having it chipped affect how it reads dvds.

Accoring to the compatibility chart is does not support -rw and according to the opinions it's finiky on -r media.

It's possiblt that the two units were built at different times or at different plants to different toleranced. Also auto-selecting units can have problems with RCE ( Region Code Enhanced ) DVD's, but that should not be a problem with DVD-R's ( but don't quote me on that since I don't do ripping ).

  3. hi m8

I've spoken to UK pioneer techinical support and they claim they should play both -rw and -r, i didn't mention to them that i had chipped it.

they would probably lecture me on its warranty is invalid etc

"should" does not mean that it will play any thing. My Pioneer DV-333 plays almost anything, but if I throw cheap media at it ( really el-chepo ) it does hiccup on occasion.

With there still being quite a variance in different batches of DVD-R anr RW media their is not way for a manufacturer to say with certinty that it will play "all" -r or -rw media.

Of course you could try cleaning the laser on the unit to see if it's just gotten a little dirty and has trouble tracking the more difficult media.
