You cannot play VCD or SVCD on XBox. My XBox won't even play burned CD media, but it will play my DVD+RW discs.

If that's what your looking for... go with a Panasonic Q. Little pricey but a sweet box.
    Have a good one,

  4. the X-Box can play VCD and SVCD files with a modchip, but as far as media goes...it might have to be on a DVD-R or CD-RW.

The modchip alone won't let you play them, you would need X-Box media player. Very easy to find, not sure on how easy to use (I'm sure not too bad). Check www.X-Box-scene.com for more info.

With a network card for the PS2 I know you can play Divx movies, not sure about other media. check www.Divx.com for that info.

I know a PS2 can play a DVD-R, but you nedd your files to be in MPEG-2, not MPEG-1, thus no VCD Compatibility as far as I know.

The XBox, as fra as I can tell, won't play so much as a burned Audio CD, maybe this has been changed on newer XBoxes but the people I know who have them can't play a Burned Audio CD-R/RW due to a Microsft "Anti-Piracy" Device, not sure howthat works though and I haven't asked about VCD.

As far as the "Panasonic Q" goes, that's one nice little "Enhcance Nintendo GameCube", but it only plays Region 2 DVD's and Games, so unless you live in japan, or are willing to pay Import Prices, as well as the cost for a "Voltage Converter" and an "Adapter Plug", it's not worth it, too bad, I liked the Panasonic Q and was hoping for a US Release. While the "Q" can play VCD's, you still need a Voiltage Conveter and AC Adapter, and you'll only beable to play Japanese GCN games on it (not nessecarly a bad thing), but it's still not worth it.

My Advice is a "Cheap" DVD Player, usually in the $80.00-$110.00 range that plays DVD's, MP3's and VCD's if you need a "Quick" player, but I don't think any of the current GAme Consoles supporty VCD, at least not on CD-R/W Media, DVD-R I belive is known to work in the PS2, but only with MPEG-2 Files, not MPEG-1.
