Hi there, this is my first post.
Ok, fist off, i recently entered the vcd world. I have one question, A while ago, i had a DVD of October sky, i played it on my Dvd player, and atempted to record it onto a vhs tap, so i could show it to my family, but when i did, the screen scrambled, and i was unable to record, obviously it is protected. My question is this:
- Is there any way for me to play a vcd in my Dvd player, and record it onto a VHS tape?
I don't care about quality, i am doing it for a french project, and quality of picture is not all that important to me.
Thanks for your help, i really want to say, that whenever i post questions on forums, its amazing how many people are willing to help others, for free, he he. Just my pubic thanks, and keep up the good work, to all the decent people in the world who help others. (sometimes you need to be congratulated for doing something good, don't give me akind of look!)

hey man whats up Cassetti
welcome to the forum
but anyway is very possible to do it either way
but you dvd player is protected by a marovision (sp??)
and what that does is prevents you from recording like that
but on this site just search for your dvd player
and see if there is a hack for it
d/l the image onto a cd and flash it in your dvd player to erase the protection

of course if you dont feel comfertable flashing your dvd player ( even i get nervious and i know what i'm doing! ) you could use a video out of the computer , if you got one ... their are very cheap devices ( like snappy .. $20-$40) that plug into a USB or parrell port of the computer that can disply video on a TV/VCR ... a quick trip to any microcenter or circut city should do it.

Snappy is a good little device (have one in the closet somewhere). Mine hooks into the parallel port. Caution, it is compatible only up to Win98. Play, Inc. went out of business and there is no more support for that device.
Another note of caution with this route, Snappy will only work with Win98 *if* you were lucky enough to download the 98 patch from the Play.com site before they removed it from the web. I have the patch and will be happy to give it to anyone for free who wants it. (my homage to this site)
Some pirates on the web are charging $15 per patch, claiming that they had to "labour over the algorithms" - bullhock!!!! They did exactly what I did and downloaded it for free from Play, Inc.
Good luck! It's not about getting what you want, it's wanting what you've got -
If you are talking Standalone DVD to vcr then a really old vcr that does not detect the macrovision should do the trick. I don't know if you could just use it as a passthrough to a better vcr but its worth a try if you have one at the cottage or in the basement junk pile.
Using the computer you need a DVD rom + some software like DVDIDLE or maybe TVTOOL (both not free) or tvcc2000 (free) if you have a compatible video card + a TV-out card connected to a vcr aux inputs + audio from sound card to vcr aux inputs. There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.
