  1. I am interested in obtaining the "best" freeware that works with XP for:

-capturing to AVI or better format for compressing
    -compressing AVI to MPEG2

I have read so many different posts on so many different products, but most cost money. Money I do not have and I am sure there are some decent products obtainable as freeware.

Please let me know what the Best freeware products are for the uses above. thanks.

  2. Capture: ATI software that comes with your card
    MPEG conversion: TMPGenc or bbmpeg

If you look at the Tools section, it lists what is free & what is not.

  3. Is there some good "All in one" software which has capture, encoding, burning capabilities.
It is ridiculous that you have to get seperate software for each of these functions. Seems like there would be something out there. Any suggestions.

  4. Hi all,

I wish somebody would come up with a "super app" that would allow cature, conversion, export, import, optimization......in fact everything that would be required whether ripping DVD's, VHS capture, NTSC to PAL conversion, burning DVD's, VCD blah blah blah.......and all under one application!

    I'd pay good money.

  5. clifsmith - you want the best do all software and you want it free. hmm, me thinks something is amiss.

If you want good all around software (if you find it) generally you have to pay. Check www.ulead.com or www.pinnaclesys.com for some examples.

There are some standalone programs that are free and do considerable amounts of the process. Virtualdub, vcdimager, vcdeasy, tmpgenc are all that many people use. More on these is in the tools & guides sections.

Ripping requires CSS decryption, which will never, for legal reasons, be built into commercial software. Everything else is available in something like Ulead Video Studio 6, though it may not be the best at all the tasks, it will do them all (except ripping DVDs, of course).
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
