  1. Planning on going on holiday next week (well more like a one night holiday) and while im away i thought i could let my computer encode this 894mb DivX file. It says it will take around 36 hours. Will having TMPEGnc encoding for this period of time kill the computer? I dont really know because i generally encode movies for about 10hours at a time. BUT 36? .. . . .

  3. Having your CPU run at 100% for an extended period can raise the temperature higher than "normal" web browsing or word processing levels.

While this isn't usually harmful if you have overclocked or your system runs hot anyway you could push it over the edge. Most systems you buy prebuilt have enough cooling power and air circulation to avoid this.

You can always check to see if your motherboard has a temerature sensor. The software may not have been installed when you got the machine - check the motherboard literature. For example the Intel D845BG Pentium 4 motherboard has 2 sensors - there is a utility on the Intel website to monitor these.

When I encode the temp rises - from the "green area" to bordering "yellow". I'd give the temps but the there are two different zones with their own "comfort levels". There is also monitoring of the cpu fan speed.

Bottom line: Encoding for long times should not be a problem for most systems - if you overclock your cpu or restrict airflow in your case you might thing about making sure your cpu stays cool running 100% for hours on end.
