  1. I was thinking... There seems to be more than one way to accomplish certain tasks in this video cap/conversion biz. For example, virtual dub will IVTC stuff and so will TMPG. Virtual dub will resize video that otherwise would have to be resized by TMPG if you capped at say 640 x 480 and were making a VCD (352x240). Is there any difference? Is one necessarily better than the other? I'm certain there a numerous things of this nature....

  2. You are right, there is more than one way to do nearly all the things we want to do with digital video. Multiple tools to choose from, different techniques to achieving the same results etc. As to which is best, if there was a simple answer to this question these forums would be a lot less busy! Just how many posts do you see each day that start off as a simple question and end up as heated discussions, even flame wars, as to what is the best way to achieve a certain desired result.

To me the answer is simple, suck it and see! Basically, find a technique that works for you and that you are happy with and stick to it. Once you have done this, keep reading and learning, trying new tools and techniques from time to time, safe in the knowledge that if it doesn't work for you, you can always fall back on your old method. If it does work, and is an improvement in someway (easier, faster, better quality output etc) than add it to your existing method.

Whatever you do, learn, have fun and don't get too upset when things don't work out as hoped for.

    Just a few thoughts,

    Bugster
