I ripped Dark City from a DVD and wanted to try the XviD codec cause I saw this movie the other day (Enough with Jennifer Lopez) which I must say had a very nice picture. A 1 hour and 55 minute long film on about 700 Mb.
So I tried the standard setting for the codec and encoded and cropped so I just keept the actual picture and not the Black letterboxning thing. The size because about 720x300 something. I ran the DVDx encoder and went to work.. when I came home I found this 395 Mb file and thought that something must have gone wrong or that I forgot to choose "WHOLE" in the outpur settings.. but gladly.. no.. it was the whole movie and the quality s good... It's not a SVCD qwality and you see sometimes small blocks but it's definately comparable with the DivX movies that fit on one CD.
I wonder why this codec is not used more often of why it's not documented... I can't find any tools for calulating with it or anything...

You never heard of Nandub or Fairuse for the DivX3.11a codec???
With XviD or DivX5.02 Pro just do a 2pass VBR encode using Virtualdub and you can get good quality.
I still Prefer NandubiAMD64. µ

No, what's NAN dub... and I did'nt really understand you.
I have no problem getting good quality with XviD and DivX 5... I don't even have to use 2-pass, it good anyway... BUT and I have never seen any DivX 3 movies that are about 1.5 hours and only takes up about 400 Mb... so I wonder why people don't use XviD more...
Or did I missunderstand you?
It feels like you rather use DivX 3... is that right?Thanx/

NANDub is a custom version of VirtualDub. I think it was also created by the original author of VirtualDub. It's used as a general AVI editor/splitter/joiner/converter. With Divx and xVid being in the AVI format, it's the tool of choice.
You should be seeing much better quality than SVCD if your using DIVX, or XVid. I would keep trying different settings until you get good results. I often take DVD/DIVX rips back to DVD with almost no loss in quality.
for more info, you can check out www.divx.com
You can find all of the guides/settings/faq's there regarding those codecs.Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
Compare the quality...
http://www.doom9.org/codec3-1.htm
Nandub is the most advanced DivX3.11a encoding utility. It uses a 2 pass procedure and changes the bitrate on the fly for every frame to achieve optimal quality and complete size predictability. As Nandub is very advanced most people dont understand it or know how to use it.
Nandub was not created by Avery Lee... it was made by Nando
Nandub does SBC 2pass encoding SBC = Smart Bitrate Control
Beside Nandub there is only one other way to encode using DivX3.11a and get perfect quality and thats Fairuse.
How to encode using Nandub(fast and gives great quality)

How to encode using Fairuse (old and sorta slow but gives great quality)

XviD is being made to replace Nandub.

DivX5 gives good quality but has less detail and sharpness *its built into the codec... like a built in post processing*.

I believe that XViD is fully open source?
There were some recent comparisons on the doom9 site in terms of quality. Impressive though probably not the best (yet).

@vitualis
I agree XviD has little bit more to go before it ready. It can and does work but its not ready. If you really wanna use it and stay up todate on it check the XviD section of doom9's forum.
I still use and prefer NandubiAMD64. µ

Would like to say the only way I will stop using Nandub is when a DVD-unit is released that supports Mpeg4 and I know what settings or profile to use with DivX5 or XviD so my encodes will work with it.
I hope KISS releases there unit this year!iAMD64. µ

Yes SVCD is good but your gonna have to use 2-4 cd's to get the same quality with it.
DVD-units are being made that support Mpeg4 and Pioneer is making a DVD-unit that supports Microsofts wmv9

Let's just hope that these players will also support full ISO MPEG-4 rather than locking you into some sort of proprietary format...

Apparently Wiseman is Divx or xVid impaired, or he/she hasn't pulled any of the recent rips lately. NeVeRLiFt is correct, and I stand by my original post. Both formats far exceed the quality MPEG-2 is capable of. Most of the DIVX rips are twice the resolution of SVCD, and about 1/3 the size. Wiseman is just being a Wiseass.
