Hi guys, I'm going to buy ATI AIW 8500DV this weekend. All I want to do is transfering/capturing from DV Cam and/or VCR to VCD/SVCD. I need help becuz I have to do it as fast as I can, my sister have visited me from oversea and I need to transfer my family video from her Sony DCR-PC101E to CD. Cannot tape to VCR becuz of (PAN, NTSC thing)
This is really my first time for this kind of stuff so I'd need your suggestions. What do you think about this card? Any suggestion for capturing/transfering software? Any thing I should do before or after installation to avoid all possible problems might occure?
I have read all the guides and search all the forum (have seen a lot of problem relate to ATI AIW, tho), but I still need your suggestions as much as you can provide. I'm sorry to ask but I have no time to test and there are about a dozen tapes I need to transfer before she goes back. Thanks in advance and hope to see some post here.
My system
WinXP pro
Pentium 1.7 Ghz
Soyo Dragon Mobo
onboard sound (c-media)
40&15GBs (7200RPM)
V-dub 1.4.x
Tmpg 2.54 Plus
Adobe Permire(if need it)

...you ever considered the StudioDV card? It's good for basic firewire transfers, and the software (Studio) is good too.
You mentioned you've read the guides and searched the forum, so you probably already know that 1hr of DV will eat approx 13GB. With that said, your HD is a little concern.
I don't know the price of the ATI card, and don't know the software that comes with it. You might want to do a side-by-side comparison. Studio software will allow you to transfer in 'preview' mode (eating up a lot less space), and then re-captures only the needed footage after your edits.
hope this helps. -
I might be able to clear some room for 15-20 GB. I have read about studio DV with will cost about 70 USD but with AIW 8500 DV I'll get firewire and TV/VIDEO in and out (cost 199 USD at this moment). I think I'll go with AIW. Any more suggestions guys?

ya_jai,
I don't know if you've purchased that card yet or not but you might want to take a look over at http://www.pricewatch.com and do a search for the AIW 8500. The price has dropped drastically since the announcement of the new AIW 9700 Pro and I'm sure you can find it for less than what you posted.Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack -
Yeah I know i can buy cheaper if I buy online, but the thing is I don't have much time to wait for shipping and if I order with overnight the price will come up about the same I buy at Bestbuy or Circuit. I'm concern about price drop too but what can we do when we really need it.
Another thing I don't want OEM or Bluk (don't really know what it is).
Do you have any suggestion how should I use this CARD? Should I transfer file via firewire or should I capture (analog) with MMC or V-dub? How to get the best out of DV Cam? -
you could buy online with 1 or 2 day shipping and still save money, although circuit city's got it for 199 .

Bought it, tested it and love it. (only with transfering DV via firewire port using Ulead Studio 6.0)

Yes but will it respect you in the morning??....lol just kidding. Glad to hear you had some good luck with the card. I only wish I could use it but the onboard DV conflicts with my Promise RAID controller and had to disable it and ended up settling for the 7500. Anyhow best of luck to you.
Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack -
I'm not sure if this's a big problem or just I miss something in the step. I follow the guide to capture with V-dub but I cannot get the channal I want to capture via V-dub or Ulead Studio 6.0. I think the channel stay at channel 5 no matter channel I change under MMC. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

ya_jai,
In capture mode with VDub go to the video tab, select source, and then TV tuner. From here you should be able to change the channel. You'll have to do this each time your setting up to capture since it defaults back everytime you close out VDub.Warning! I'm baaaaaaaaack -
Thanks kayfam, I got it to work now. I'm not sure if I wanna capture from my cable TV but know abit better than know nothing, right? lol
